Mask and Liddell being inducted into the UFC HoF this weekend. Great choices.

I mean, where is this hallowed hall anyway? Seriously, who votes to get fighters in there? Oh that's right, a prestigious panel of no one but Dana'er and the Ferttitas. To me, its just an illusory accolade. I certainly hope they dont devote much time on the ppv to it. |

j/kActually, I think those are good choices. Mask did alot not to just promote the UFC but alot of smaller shows (tuff-n-uff, PFC, King of The Cage, ROTR, etc.) so I'm glad he's being recognized. Liddell is a great choice too, like it or not he got alot of people interested in MMA. Title defenses against Tito & Jeremy Horn might not be that grand, but again...he did / does alot for the sport. |

Re: The Official MMA Thread - Part IV
Yeah Liddell is clearly a HOF fighter and Mask did do a lot for the UFC but that doesn't change the fact that the UFC Hall of Fame is the most illegitimite HOF in sports.

Re: The Official MMA Thread - Part IV
I dont think I'm being callous.
The body that determines who gets the accolades is just the company, not fighters, fans, sports writers, managers, etc, so its not any kind of real achievement other than a meaningless way for the UFC to pat its own back and control its image (For instance, if you think Tito or Frank Shamrock will ever get nods while they are on the outs, you're dreaming). Besides ,other than the nod, being a hall of famer gets you nothing. Its not like anyone always says "UFC Hall of Famer Dan Severn" or that title elevates him or anyone else in any significant way. They dont even have annual events or any incentive, other than some glad handing at the induction, to be a "hall of famer." To me its just a dopey distraction. Its already a bloated ppv, so I want fights occupying my time, not a montage of a t-shirt guy and Liddell clocking hand-picked opponents for years on end. Re: The Official MMA Thread - Part IV
I've attended eight Tuff-N-Uff events (nine after this week) and I've never seen Lewis at any of them. Alright, the ninth one shouldn't count because he is dead ::insert tombstone smilie here::
You probably can come to your own conclusions as to what I am getting at. Yes. I wish to be inducted into the Hall of Fame what I have done for MMA. *commences preparing speech* E |

Re: The Official MMA Thread - Part IV
And I attended three ROTR/RWE cards in the fiftieth state and never saw Lewis at any of those either. I wonder where he was "promoting" the event from.

Re: The Official MMA Thread - Part IV
Figured I would ask here, but does anyone know of any good MMA/jujitsu places around New Brunswick, NJ? I used to really like taking the classes back when I lived in North Jersey, but I don't know what gym would be good around here. I'm trying to get back into shape, and this was always fun for me.

Re: The Official MMA Thread - Part IV
Quick secondary question:
How much does it cost for these top level guys to run a training camp? I was looking back through the payouts for a few of the last few UFC PPV's and saw that some of these guys were making as little as $5000 for the fight. Is that enough to run a camp? How much do the sponsors take care of (if anything)? For these $5000 guys, are they still working a second/third job? How much do you need to make to become a 'fighter only'? Alrighty, so this turned from one quick question into a bunch of them, but any insight is much appreciated.

In terms of camps, if you are low level, you work within the camp, get your training in with the usual day to day mix, whereas top/mid tier names have camps tailored just for them. Skilled mid tier guys can make a decent living from just fighting and extra training work (having a top camp helps), sparring, seminars, etc. Its a niche sport, so making a substantial, long term, career living, is rare. ![]() The only picks I really lean towards with some certainty are Miller, Bonnar, and Fitch. Jones-O'Brien is up in the air for me simply because I'm not sold on Jones yet and totally cold on O'Brien as anything special. Last edited by Slumbering Fist; 07-11-09 at 03:00 PM. |
