Re: Biggest still-existing rivalry in sports?
I admit that "American" was missing from my question. I clearly meant a rivalry in national sports and that was the extent of my question. There's not enough (assoc.) football fans here to have a proper rivalry discussion on that subject.

Re: Biggest still-existing rivalry in sports?
Red Sox/Yankees is a local thing. ESPN loves it, but much of the country just yawns at it.
Ohio State/Michigan is much bigger. Nobody outside of Michigan likes Michigan. At least, nobody worth mentioning.

Re: Biggest still-existing rivalry in sports?
Actually quite a few people outside of Michigan like the Wolverines, which would help explain why their games are televised in my area nearly every week.

But it's still got to be Rangers/Celtic.

Re: Biggest still-existing rivalry in sports?
I think you are 1 million percent wrong. Yankees vs. Red Sox is not a local thing, not with all the NY and Boston transplants everywhere and the bandwagon fans everywhere. Hell, there are still probably more NYY fans in Tampa than Rays fans.

Re: Biggest still-existing rivalry in sports?
I agree that the Yanks-Sox is the biggest. You also have to consider the bandwagons of both teams. They are more known to the rest of the country than some regional college rivalry. Just look at the sheer numbers of fans of both teams (with varying degrees of bandwagonism in each fan).

Re: Biggest still-existing rivalry in sports?
Not with the recent Rays' success. The bandwagon has swelled just like it did with the Bucs and Lightning. There are TB hats all over the place now. We'll see if they stay if the team runs into any adversity. I have my doubts. Look at the Lightning now and that 100,000 waiting list for Bucs tickets? Not anymore.

If this thread was done 10 years ago, I'm sure Red Wings and Avalanche would get a few mentions.

Re: Biggest still-existing rivalry in sports?
Thank you. It may not be the biggest nationwide, but it certainly deserves a mention. I don't know of any other sports rivalry that actually predates the teams and began with a shooting war.

Re: Biggest still-existing rivalry in sports?
If I didn't previously think Dook/UNC was the biggest rivalry, I would have after today when my CBS affilate switched out of an OT conference championship game to air Dook/UNC in its entirety.

Re: Biggest still-existing rivalry in sports?
If you're talking a really long history of rivalries in the USA, I have to mention the following:
NFL NFC East between the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Washington Redskins AFC Central (now AFC North) between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the "old" Cleveland Browns (now Baltimore Ravens) and "new" Cleveland Browns NFC Central (now NFC North) between the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings AFC West between the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders Divison I FBS college football Army-Navy Yale-Harvard Ohio State-Michigan Notre Dame-USC Florida-Tennessee Florida-Georgia Florida-Florida State Alabama-Auburn Oklahoma-Texas Oklahoma-Nebraska (though less so in recent years) Division I college basketball UNC Chapel Hill-Duke Major League Baseball Yankees-Red Sox Cardinals-Cubs Giants-Dodgers Phillies-Mets (especially in recent years) NHL Red Wings-Avalanche (though it has waned in recent years) Canadiens-Maple Leafs

Re: Biggest still-existing rivalry in sports?
Thats funny because in NY they did not switch out of the Missouri Valley championship game and showed that game in its entirety before changing to the Duke UNC game.

OSU/Michigan is funny. does anyone outside of the Big Ten country even think that's a top 3 - 5 Rivalry? |

Re: Biggest still-existing rivalry in sports?
Since both are such big schools, enrollment-wise, there are a lot of alumni for each school spread out all over the country (or world, for that matter.) But it's hard for me to judge, since I live and work right in the epicenter of it all - plus, I don't even like "American" football, so I get really annoyed by all the frenzy that gets built up every fall.

Re: Biggest still-existing rivalry in sports?
The Rangers and the Celtics don't even play in the same sport. One's an NHL team, the other's an NBA team.
