SOMEONE wins 2009 Daytona 500

Kyle Busch lead 88 laps but was caught up in a wreck with 75 laps to go. After a caution, the leaders were Elliot Sadler, Reed Sorenson, Matt Kenseth and Kevin Harvick. After a little bumping, Kenseth and Harvick past Sorenson. Then Harvick pushed Kenseth and the two of them past Sadler. First time in the race Kenseth has lead. Highest position Harvick has been in too. About 5 seconds later a wreck accured behind them and the caution flag came out. Then in started raining. They ran 6 laps under caution before officials red flagged the race. They then checked the radar and the rain would continue for another 1 and half hours. They called the race giving both #17 Matt Kenseth and owner Jack Roush their 1st Daytona 500 victory.

Kenesth started 43rd and finished 1st. BIG ACHIEVEMENT

It sucked the way it ended.. I'm happy for Matt though. I just cant stand his owner !!!

Nascar knew there was rain coming why not start the race a little early. I could have lived without the Digger cartoon and Keith urban.

re: SOMEONE wins 2009 Daytona 500

I hate wins by rain-out. I'm soooo glad I didn't go this year though, based on what I spent last year when I went I would be pissed if the shortened it. But, it was a good race up to that point.

My main beef is NASCAR's continued inconsitency with rules enforcement. Yesterday they penalize a Nationwide driver for rough driving (and I don't think it was anywhere near that) and today Jr. takes out Vickers and several others and gets nothing. Heck, even the usual butt kissing announcers agreed that Jr. acted too much on the aggressive side. I have a feeling that Talladega was in the back of his mind...

re: SOMEONE wins 2009 Daytona 500

Actually the announcers backtracked later on but I didn't think it was that bad I really didn't think it was that big of a deal once I saw it a few times, plus what is the guys supposed to do you forced him down to the grass and then boxed him out and everyone is racing for the rain. Rain outs suck but it was raining in the morning also so they were hoping it would pass so they could get it in so it was a no win situation today. And congrats Matt good guy and nice move to get up front

I think he went around in circles for 500 miles faster than anyone else, or something like that. Presumably in a car.

I contiually fail to understand why people who are not fans of NASCAR insist on posting in NASCAR threads on why they don't like the sport. I don't like bowling, but I don't feel compelled to post in a bowling thread how boring I find it, or in a figure skating thread how it's not really a sport because it's too subjective, or a rodeo thread on how anyone interested in such a spectacle should be ashamed.

What's the motivation for such posts? Is it some transparent attempt to feel superior, or just a flagrant flaunting of one's own ignorance?

That being said, today's race sucked.

Well, it certainly looked MUCH worse than the incident in the Nationwide race (which look way more incidental). If they penalized that move, they should have penalized Jr. He was obviously not on his game: missing his pit, pitting outside the box, not knowing Vickers was a lap down too and fighting for the free pass. I think Kyle Busch hit it right on the head with his comments

Quote:
"One guy that had problems all day on pit road made his problems our problems and then our problems a big problem," Busch said. "It was just unfortunate with that and it was really uncalled for to have two lapped cars to be racing each other and bumping each other like that.
Oh, and as to the "going in circles, turning left" crowd....it's always amusing to hear that. Some people just don't get it.

Having actually ridden in a Sprint Cup car it's amazing that these guys can endure 300-500 miles. I mean we only got up to about 175mph and when we got into the corners...WOW!! I have an even greater appreciation for that those guys do on Sunday!

Jr is always going to get a free pass on these types of things because of his last name.

re: SOMEONE wins 2009 Daytona 500

As far as missing the pit did you hear Junior talk about that it was kind of funny he was like all the damn signs are pink we paint it one color it works for a couple weeks and then everyone paints theres that color. I think everyone was taking the whole thing a little too serious I really didn't have a problem with them two racing hard for the lucky dog (which is an unfortunate byproduct of the lucky dog) it's Daytona and its gonna happen . As far as penalizing JR I don't really care if they did or didn't , but they did penalize him on pit road which was kind of bullshit and the the official getting in the way while they did their job was kind of dumb.

mod note - Guys on the spoiler front, please don't put scores or results in thread titles. Some people record the event to watch it later.

Actually, I don't get that. I've always wondered if the right side of drivers' faces are getting stretched out like those astronaut training videos as they get older. Putting up with that type of centrifugal force over such extended periods of time must be annoying.

Can't they make a figure eight racetrack or go clockwise (turn right) every other race to balance out this effect? (And yes, I am aware of out the pit stops are set up!)

That being said, today's race sucked.

It's a thread about NASCAR on a non NASCAR focused forum. What do you think it going to happen? Everyone that didn't watch the race just thinks it's a bunch of rednecks turning left and is going to remind you of it at every chance.
