2007 World Junior Hockey Championships

The tournament just started today, and after two games, there have already been two major upsets. The US lost 2-1 to Germany, and Finland lost to Belarus 4-3.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - this tournament features the best hockey you'll see all year.

The 2-1 US loss was in OT. It matters, becuase the scoring this year is different. Each game is worth 3 standings points. If it ends in regulation, all 3 go to the winner. If it ends in OT or a shootout, 2 to the winner, 1 to the loser.

Playoff/Relegation Rounds:
Top three teams from each group advance to playoffs. First place teams (A1 & B1) get a bye to the semifinals. A1 will play winner of B2-A3 quarterfinal game, B1 will play winner of A2-B2 quarterfinal game. Semifinal winners play for gold medal, Semifinal losers play for bronze, quarterfinal losers play for 5th place.

Bottom two teams from each group advance to relegation round. Teams carry the points from the games played against other qualifying team from their own group in the preliminary round. They play only the two teams from the other group. Last two placed teams are relegated to Division I for next year, top two placed teams remain in Division A.

Anyone know if the Canada game is being broadcast live in the US? I'm watching the Sweden/USA game on Center Ice now, but I don't see a listing for the championship game. Nothing on ESPN either.

It seems that even the TSN.ca broadband live cast is restricted to Canadians IP only.

Congrats goes out to our Canadian Juniors players, coaches and management.

Some of the players that impressed me the most in our Canadian team were Price, Toews and Latang. Price was unbelievable in this tournament. If he can carry that level of play to the pros, Montreal will have found another amazing goalie.
