Lemieux undergoes heart surgery

Mon Feb 27, 8:33 PM ET

Pittsburgh Penguins owner and former star player Mario Lemieux underwent a minor surgical procedure to help him restore a normal heart rhythm, the National Hockey League team confirmed Monday.

Lemieux, who retired as a player earlier this season, is expected to be released from hospital on Tuesday.

The procedure is known as an ablation and Lemieux is expected to be able to resume normal activities shortly.

Lemieux, 40, was diagnosed with a heart condition known as atrial fibrillation - an irregular heartbeat - that caused him to miss more than a month of play and was a major factor in his decision to retire as a player on January 24.

Club officials say Lemieux will not have to continue to take medication for his condition if the procedure is a success.

-----------------------------------

Glad he is doing ok. He said when he retired that he would opt for the surgery rather than take medication the rest of his life. Hopefully this will allow him to enjoy the retirement more. Now, if the Pens could just get that new arena.

re - Fantasy

As I said before, there are 2 teams not participating still. I say give them a week to respond to the thread, or have their teams jettisoned. Trade deadline is 10 days away.

Hopefully the Leafs can turn their losing ways around, tonight, against the Caps. I think that the Olympic break probably helped them in many ways, including resting injured players (Eric Lindros should be back tonight!), and also boosting morale of players like Sundin, Tellqvist, and Berg. I hope they can make it into the playoffs this year.

Go Leafs Go!

Not a good start to the playoff stretch for the Leafs last night although with guys just getting back from Italy i wouldnt put too much into the bad performance agaisnt the Caps but they better get their butts in gear of golfing season's comin' a bit early.

Think this might have had something to do with Kasparaitis's hit on Simon Gagne in the Olympics?

Well the Leafs stunk it up again in Buffalo last night, playoff hopes are looking slim.

On a positive note it was nice to see them honor Pat Lafontaine with his number being retired and getting to hear one more "La la la la la laaaaafontaine!"

If the Leafs are going to throw in the towel for this season its time to bring up the younger players.

Are the waiver wires closed after the trade deadline?

I checked today, and ther is only one person inactive in the last month (Whisky Badgers). I've emailed him and gave him until the 10th to get back to me if he wants to continue. If not, we'll have another waiver draft, similar to the one before. Of course if the waivers are closed after the 9th, we might not get to use his players. It was my understanding that waivers were still active throughout the season.

I'm not too familiar with the yahoo set up but in other fantasy leagues like ESPN, the waivers system and the trading deadline are two separate things. I'll be surprised if they won't let us use the waiver wires because the trading deadline has passed.

I think is time for the Leafs to start looking at the future and start thinking longterm goals.
First on the agenda should be what to do with McCabe.
Second, this will definitely be the last year for Eddie in a Leafs uniform so might as well start playing Tellqvist.

If the Pens would start playing before going down 5-0, they might win a few games.

Good to see Koltsov finally get a goal....

Even though the 7-5 score doesn't indicate it, I think the Pens outplayed Carolina tonight. The shaky goaltending in the first period didn't help (Fleury letting up 3 goals on 4 shots). The last 4 games the Pens have actually looked like a decent team, but they still have 10 minutes or so every game where they just don't play. Orpik's hit on Cole looked pretty bad. Hopefully Cole is ok.

I had to go out for supper last night, so I only got a chance to watch the last half of the Leafs/Sens game. I thought the Leafs played quite well, even though they did lose 4-2 (the last goal was an empty net goal, of course.) I hope they don't trade McCabe, but they probably will. He's a player they could build a team around. I think Eddie may retire after this season though, so they definitely should play Telly (who is great) more.

Ouch. Is this a case where Orpik could face a suspension?

The Toronto vs. Montreal game should be good, tonight. The Leafs DESPERATELY need to win it, in order to gain any ground on the Habs. Hopefully the fact that the Habs played in Philly last night, will have an effect, as the Leafs should be well-rested. Heh.

It has been too quiet with less than 48 hours left before the trade deadline. I wonder if any trades will happen at all.

With the cap implications, it probably won't be the flurry of trades it used to be. I bet there will be some movement, but not like in past years.

Yeah, the Leafs/Habs game was great. It was nice to see Toronto playing as well as they did. I just hope that they can gather up some momentum from this win, in order to fight their way into the playoffs.

Did you know that they placed Mariusz Czerkawski on Waivers, yesterday?

EDIT: Czerkawski was picked up by the Boston Bruins today. Also, Edmonton acquired Dwayne Roloson from Minnesota, for a draft pick.

Some movement...

Columbus: Richardson to the Leafs for a conditional pick.

NYR: Niemenen to SJ for a 3rd round pick.

NYI: Parrish and Sopel to LA for Tambellini and Grebeshkov. (As an Isles fan, I love this trade)

Wow. What an awful trade for Colorado. Theodore is incredibly inconsistent.
