Former Cowboys quarterback Quincy Carter has signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets, sources close to the negotiations said.

Sources said the deal is worth a little more than $500,000 and includes incentives that would pay him like a starter if he receives significant playing time.

Carter is expected to be on the practice field this afternoon.

Carter was released by the Cowboys six days into training camp amid allegations he violated the league's substance-abuse policy.

Chad Pennington, a former No. 1 pick, is the Jets' starter, but there is competition for the backup job between Ricky Ray, who led Edmonton to the Canadian Football League championship last season, and Brooks Bollinger. Bollinger, a sixth-round pick last year, recently sprained his knee. The Jets released backup Vinny Testaverde, now the Cowboys' starter, on June 1.

Carter passed for 3,302 yards and 17 touchdowns with 21 interceptions last season as the Cowboys went 10-6 and made the playoffs for the first time since 1999.

Two club sources have told The Dallas Morning News that the combination of Carter recently violating the league's substance-abuse policy, a poor attitude toward his competition with Testaverde and an average performance in the first week of practice led to his release.

Because he violated the substance-abuse policy, Carter faces a fine of four game checks but does not face a suspension, three sources said. Another positive test would result in a four-game suspension, according to the league's substance-abuse policy

The NFLPA has filed a grievance on Carter's behalf, contending that he was wrongfully terminated and should get back pay.

Kind of weird. Barring injury, Carter won't play. I'd figure he'd pick a team with a shot at playing time like Arizona or Baltimore.

and the first thing he did when he got in town was head over to the mets' clubhouse to find a good dealer

I suppose the Jets next move will be to get Parcells back. :)

if he did indeed fail a test like they made it sound like, wouldn't it still cause problems at a new team?

seems to me like they just didn't want their guy as their QB but he did too well last year to just get rid of him... so they staged this big thing where they never actually said anything, but did everything in a way that people would start pointing fingers and making assumptions...

For the record, I meant both Lucas and Carter are skittish QBs who think they're a lot better than they are. I wasn't referring to them both being black.

Tell me about it hehe. I've been a Jets fan since 1980 and my friends used to kid me that the Jets were the team of 2000 (meaning they would not win the Super Bowl until the year 2000, bla bla bla...).

Not hard to be a fan at all, why?

After 4 games he'll be able to give us a backup with experience. He throws some picks but has shown he can be a starting QB in the NFL and could start for some teams right now.

This is a sound move. The question is, will Bollinger go, or will Rickey Ray?
