NFL Coach of the Year -- Marvin Lewis in a runaway

Bengal Coach Marvin Lewis appears to be running away with the NFL Coach of the Year honors -- at least according to the current fan tally at NFL.com. He has a near two-to-one edge over his closest rival, Bill Parcells of the Cowboys.

Dunno. All I know is that it's on nfl.com, and they're asking fans to vote. Were I a betting man, I'd say fans would not be picking this, due to the likelihood of someone swamping the NFL site with bogus votes like MLB and NBA get for their All-Star ballots.

I think Bellicheck deserves to be number 1. He has had tons of injuries and led his team to the best record in the NFL right now. Thats a little more impressive than leading your team to 1 game over .500 and second place in your division, I dont care if it is the Bengals.

I was with Tony Kornheiser on this - if Marvin Lewis wins 6 games in Cincinnati in 2003, he's Vince Lombardi.

There was no culture of winning in Cincy. Lewis made Cincy believe that they could win. Bellichick is very strong 2nd on my list.

But Cincinatti has had the talent to win. They should have won this year. It shouldnt be such a big surprise that they are doing well this year. Marvin Lewis has alot to do with it, but giving him extra points because the team sucked for years isnt fair to me.

I disagree with your "extra points" comment. The Stripes have essentially the SAME team this year as last. Kitna, Johnson1, Johnson2, Dillon... they were all there last year. The only significant roster move was losing Takeo Spikes and getting Kevin Hardy. The real difference between 2002 and 2003 has been one of motivation and attitude. If that not the coach's purview, I'd like to know who to give the credit to. Lewis took a bunch of losers and convinced them they were winners.

If you want to compare the Bengals to the Pats, you must include as a reference baseline the teams' recent histories. The Pats won a Super Bowl recently, the Bengals haven't lost less than 10 games in a decade. IMO, the best coach is the man who gets the best out of his players. Both have done good jobs, there's no mistaking that, but while the job Belichick has done has been remarkable, Lewis has done what experts thought was impossible -- turning the Bengals into a contender.

I agree with Tony K... Lewis, this year, is Lombardi.

Well, we apparently don't see eye to eye on this one. Still, 3/4ths of those voting for Lewis or Belichick voted for the guy who has squeezed 7 wins out of an (as you say) 2-decade long shitty team. And I'd be willing to bet there are more folks in New England voting than in Metro Cincy.

Are you a Bengals fan like myself? If you aren't then you really are in a time warp or do not understand how this team has been run for over a decade. You're correct, the Bengals have had talent for years, never let anyone fool you on that, but they never a had a motivator, a leader, someone to kick the complacency out of them---a history of abysmal losing is something hard to exorcise and Lewis has done that this season. Mike Brown also---who has been nothing short of despised by fans and media---takes some credit in allowing Lewis to fully take this franchise.

Lewis deserves all the lauding and prizes.
