Big day in sports, Sat. 6/7
Big day coming up this Saturday.
We got Funny Cide going for the Triple Crown. There have only been 11 TC winners, and not one in 25 years. We got future Hall of Famer Roger Clemens going for victory 300 against (of all teams) the Cubbies, who as of today are actually tied for first place. We got the NJ Devils with a possibility of winning the Stanley Cup in Anaheim if they beat the Ducks. Am I forgetting anything? |

I've watched a heck of lot more horse racing and hockey in the last 2 months than baseball and this is coming from someone who went to about 500 MLB games in the 90s.

Well probably 50 of those games were non-Orioles games but yeah. It is not only the Orioles - I am down on the entire league in general. One thing for sure - more people will be watching the Belmont on Saturday than Clemens going for 300.

The French Open women's final. It should be a good match - Kim Clijsters vs. Justine Henin-Hardenne.

Isn't there a basketball game or something going on?
Edit: Wrong day....that's tonight.. The college world series is going on on Saturday, though.

Speaking of unwatched sports, I believe that the College World Series will be set this weekend, no?

• Quoth Phil L. • I said "no one," not "Americans" ... typical American, believing he's the center of the Universe. Soccer is more popular than horse racing, hockey, NASCAR, and the IRL combined. Thanks for playing ... next. ![]() das

There's probably a WNBA game or two on Saturday.
The highlight for me will be the Cardinals-Orioles game. Both teams will be wearing 1944(year the Cardinals beat the Browns in the World Series) retro uniforms. It's the first time in 50 years that the former St. Louis Browns have been in town. |

The three events I initially mentioned: Triple Crown, Clemens win 300, and Stanley Cup, are all being covered live by nationwide network television, and will be viewed by millions. Soccer meanwhile, (if it's even taking place, who knows?) will be covered by *no* (read that as zero) television. Oh wait, there might be that obscure satellite channel that five people will be tuning in to. ![]() In any case, Saturday is a big day for American sports fans. |

Not to dwell on this point, but "no television?" You mean "no American television." When there's a game to be played, you better believe it's being televised all over the world to a huge audience. In any case, I didn't bring up soccer ... you did ... and as the world's most popular sport, it's probably the worst possible example to be used to combat a joke about sports popularity.Btw, the fact that soccer is not popular in America doesn't translate to the popularity in America of hockey and horse racing. Relative to soccer, all sports are popular in America. Relative to American sports, however, the picture is much different. All that being said, it was just a joke ... Spoiler:

Belmont has best TV ratings since '87
Associated Press NEW YORK -- Funny Cide's bid for the Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes produced the highest overnight rating for any horse race since the 1990 Kentucky Derby. The 10.4 rating was also the highest overnight rating for the Belmont Stakes since at least 1987, when Alysheba's attempt at the Triple Crown produced a 9.2 overnight rating. It was also a 13 percent increase from the 2002 race. Funny Cide, a New York-bred gelding ridden by Jose Santos, finished third Saturday in the Belmont behind Ten Most Wanted and champion Empire Maker. Last year's Belmont, which featured War Emblem's failed bid for the Triple Crown, drew a 9.2 rating. Sarava won the 2002 Belmont, with War Emblem finishing eighth. Overnight ratings measure the 55 largest TV markets in the United States, covering nearly 70 percent of the country. Each overnight rating point represents about 735,000 TV homes. |
