Darryl Strawberry's son heading to Maryland Terrapins?

Quote:
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- D.J. Strawberry, the son of former major league baseball player Darryl Strawberry, has made an oral commitment to play basketball at Maryland.

Strawberry is expected to sign with the Terrapins in November, a source close to the school's recruiting efforts told The (Baltimore) Sun.

The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 11.5 points in his junior season at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif. He chose the defending national champion Terrapins over Florida State and DePaul, according to The Sun.

A Maryland spokesman said Monday that he could neither confirm nor deny the oral commitment because of NCAA rules prohibiting comment on available recruits until they sign the national letter of intent.
Is D.J. any good? I haven't seen his name among the top prospects.

But it's cool that the NATIONAL CHAMPION Terps can recruit from the west coast!

Mater Dei is one of the basketball powers in the nation. They are loaded year after year and Straw was the 6th man last year. He'll start this year and put up much better numbers.

In fact, Dave Telep has DJ ranked #53 in the nation in his latest rankings....which he put out before Strawberry committed to Maryland.

While a wing player wasn't our biggest need, there is some thought that taking Strawberry was a move to help get his buddy Ekene Ibekwe to come to Maryland as well. Ibekwe is from LA and is a top 30 player and likely McDonald's All American next year. He is down to USC and Maryland right now. Having a buddy from LA might make it easier for him to decide to move clear across the country to go to college.

The only down side is if we do land Ibekwe now we can't get a center in this class and we desperately need one. Oh well.

Trelach, isn't it great to be able to recruit all across the country now? Sure is great to be National Champs!

You're right about that! I actually can't imagine getting a McDonald's All American from California. I couple years ago I was shocked if we could go out of state to get a good player. Now we're going to Cali!
