A's Draft Pick Dies

I guess I can understand now how Cards fans felt/feel.

LSU baseball team captain Wally Pontiff was found dead in his bedroom at his parents home in Metairie this morning.

Reports indicate Pontiff died from natural causes. He went to a New Orleans Zephyrs game last night and did not respond when family members tried to wake him.

Pontiff was a 21st round draft pick of the Oakland Athletics in last month's amateur draft. He was playing in an amateur wooden bat league this summer before coming back to Louisiana recently to decide whether he would return for his senior season at LSU. All indications were that he would be coming back to Baton Rouge.

Pontiff started the last two seasons at third base for the Tigers and played left field as a true freshman when LSU won its last World College Series in 2000.

Outside of his baseball interests, Pontiff was pursuing a pre-medicine degree at LSU and held a 3.25 grade point average.

A news conference is scheduled at 2 p.m. this afternoon at LSU.
