Well...just saw some new "Update"...and they're saying he's still alive but clinging to life......we need some serious prayers here for him and all the Vegas victims.

Actually no. They had a second album, Volume 2 as a quartet.

That's what breaks my heart. That touring, while essential for an artist's income stream these days (now that there is no catalog album sales to speak of), can be exhausting and taxing on the body. As more famous artists age, we might well see this situation more often. I hope other older artist don't over-extend themselves.

1:35 PM PT -- Sources tell us at 10:30 Monday morning a chaplain was called to Tom's hospital room. We're told the family has a do not resuscitate order on Tom. The singer is not expected to live throughout the day, but he's still clinging to life. A report that the LAPD confirmed the singer's death is inaccurate -- the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. handled the emergency.

Volume 3. There was no Volume 2.

Petty was one of the greats. I love the Wilbury's stuff. I love the stuff with the Heartbreakers. I love the solo stuff. My favorites are probably American Girl, Even the Losers, Yer So Bad, and Don't Come Around Here No More. But there's no such thing as a bad Tom Petty Song. Never heard any of the Mudcrutch stuff -- I should remedy that.

Refugee, Change of Heart, Woman in Love, The Waiting, You got Lucky, Don't Do Me Like That---great songwriting, classic American rock sound. A career to be proud of.

Love this recent picture of Petty with Bob Seger. THere's not a bad word I can say about either of these guys. Their devotion to the tradition of rock n roll makes them untouchable.

Younger days:

You would think that you could trust a person has died when the local PD confirms it, but I guess not. Not much different than the many false stories coming out of Vegas today. Ridiculous what passes as "news reporting" these days. Got to be first, not accurate.

But since nobody is retracting the report that he has been on life support, essentially brain dead, seems like there will be a final time of death before too long.

Yeah, sadly it's just an academic distinction at this point.

He was truly one of the All-Time greats. I still remember the first time a friend played "Refugee" for me at a Summer day camp when I was like 11 or 12. I was instantly hooked. Been a huge fan ever since.

This is freakin' awful. Just heard as I was leaving work and feel stunned. One of my favorite songs by Petty is The Last DJ - possibly because it was inspired by a local L.A. DJ I listened to for years (Jim Ladd, now on satellite). It just felt a bit more personal, even though I never met either one of them (plus, it's a good song).

Rest in peace, Tom. You were one of the greats.

Keith Richards. Just putting that out there.

Jeff Lynne and Bob Dylan better watch out.

Maybe we should have a separate death pool just for musicians.

I'm in shock. Horrible timing, but my mother just passed away Friday evening. I've been dealing with that over the weekend. Then I wake up to the Las Vegas mass shooting early this morning. I spend most of my day making arrangements for my Mom's memorial service, then I get home and hear about Tom Petty. I'm ready to crawl into a cave.

I got into Petty really late in life. I think it was Mudcrutch in 2009 that made me a fan -- the song they used in Appaloosa is great.

What's a trip is that they ended the tour like a week ago at the Hollywood -- a friend got to be front row and they also played in Pasadena at the Arroyo Seco festival thing a couple of months ago.

Been a big fan since "Don't Come Around Here No More" yet never managed to see him in concert.

I hope he wasn't back on the big H.

In a weird twist of fate 2 of my friends decided to go to the Tom Petty concert last Monday at the Hollywood Bowl instead of going to the Vegas country music festival.

There are many reports still surfacing that he's not actually dead.

Yes, but as posted earlier, it seems he is essentially brain dead and on artificial life support. But at this pint I wouldn't be surprised if the news outlets got that wrong as well. Possibly best to wait until one of his close friends says something official to the media.
