He was the director, right? Granted his source material wasn't great, but he chose to make the film and he chose to make it in the manner he did. So, yes.

... but he seems to harp very strongly on the idea that the events of the first film happened by accident. They didn't. Weyland-Yutani knew that the alien ship was on LV-426, and deliberately sent the Nostromo there on their way back. Ash was programmed to ensure a Xenomorph specimen made it back to earth.
I've been deep diving on podcasts, just started reading the "Alien" novelization, and have been slowly digesting some of the extras from home video. It took me a while to come back, and I still don't really want to talk about Covenant ...
I disagree with Supermallet's assessment. I have always thought the events of "Alien" were a fluke. I have never found anything questionable about having a standing (albeit covert) contingency should a space vessel encounter "the unknown". I don't think any of the events leading up to finding the alien species were pre-planned. I do not recall anything from the first film that would lead one to believe it was deliberate (like "Aliens").

In the critical Ash-bashing scene though ... yes, The Company knew about the signal. Unmanned probes had picked it up. The Company did not know what they would find, but they had deciphered the signal enough to know it was a warning to stay away, not an SOS. Ash was placed on board to redirect the Nostromo to the signal, investigate, and determine if there was anything (life form or tech) that could be weaponized for profit. The intent was for the crew to "unknowingly" bring it back without incident. The crew was deemed expendable though. It was not only less conspicuous to send a commercial crew than a military expedition, but it was cheaper too.
Props to Supermallet!

"Insure return of organism for analysis."
All that line shows is that WY knew there was some type of organism there. It doesn't state they knew it was the "ALIEN" we love. They wanted first dibs on whatever organism it was. Crew expendable. $$$$

Got the Digital HD of this last night. Went through the deleted scenes -- some of those could have been put back especially one with Franco.
There's a featurette called Advent or something like that where it has a voiceover from David as he works on his experiments in the cave creating new life. He mentions and it shows him carving up Shaw and using her skin, organs, blood, etc., to create new organisms but it looks like he was only able to creat xenomorph eggs. Towards the end of the clip he mentions that now he will use Daniels to create his "Queen."
It's a cool clip.

Instead of rebooting franchises, I wish the studios wouldn't fuck them up in the first place.

So are we now supposed to speculate that Daniels was turned into the queen? In all honesty, it's best to just let the series die at this point and let fans fill in the blanks on their own. I think we can infer from the movie and deleted scenes:
-David used Daniels and the crew to create the queen and other eggs.
-Remaining engineers found David and either overcame him or something. They recognize some of their work in his.
-Realizing the danger of what has been created (though not out of concern for humans), they attempt to contain it, but cannot and crash on LV-426 (they crash a lot, don't they?) . Warning signal is sent out and intercepted by WY, who are now aware of the weapon due to David's earlier communications.

Just the first one that I bolded -- and that's assuming they make the third prequel bridging the gap to Alien. The Queen would lay the eggs, too.

Absolutely terrible. Kind of dug the first 20 minutes or so, nice atmosphere before diluting into your standard shooter and an utterly predictable story, the last 10-15 minutes especially was grating to watch knowing the "twist". Fuck this movie. And this is coming from someone who genuinelyliked Prometheus.

Now see, I didn't get a "Prometheus" vibe from this at all. But in the end, you are correct. It is a giant p.o.s. mess. BTW, I loved "Prometheus" and finally saw the Agent 9 fan edit. That was awesome!

Well, I wanted to like this. I group this in the "It's so bad yet still better than Predators" category, which is a low fucking bar. I did like the cast at least.
