I liked the idea of different directors, but 3, 4, and 5 don't feel considerably different in tone anymore compared to the differences from 1 - 3 so i'm fine with McQuarrie returning.

Awesome news, I thought part 5 was the perfect blend of style, focus and action. Hoping Rebecca is back too, even in a smaller role... as well as a few from parts 3, 4.

That's cool.
Somehow I liked 4 more than 5. Even though 5 had the script that 4 didn't.... 4 was still that much more entertaining cuz of the direction they went w/ it.

Mission Accomplished: Rebecca Ferguson First Tom Cruise Leading Lady Doing a Second “M:I”
http://www.showbiz411.com/2015/12/08...ng-a-second-mi
Confirmed: Rebecca Ferguson is about to make movie history. She’s the first actress to return as Tom Cruise’s leading lady in the “Mission Impossible” series. I am told that Ferguson is signed, sealed and delivered for part 6, to be directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who is also returning from part 5, “Rogue Nation.”

I do hope when Cruise is done with this series, for his last Mission, they gather as many of the previous actors like Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Maggie Q and Paula Patton.

‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Halts Prep Until Tom Cruise And Others Deals Get Worked Out
http://deadline.com/2016/08/mission-...ut-1201806220/
EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures has stopped the ticking clock and halted early pre-production of M:I6 Mission: Impossible. The studio won’t start up again until salary is worked out with franchise star Tom Cruise. The studio had hired between 15 to 20 people in London to start the soft prep work after writer/director Christopher McQuarrie and Cruise worked out the beats of the film, and McQuarrie went off to write the script. Those hired had just begun to work on the design of visual effects, and were told today to stop, we learned.
We’re hearing split versions for the reason: one scenario is that the studio is looking for Cruise and other producers including Bad Robot and Skydance to trim their fees. The other scenario is that Cruise wants Paramount to step up to the raise he got from Universal on The Mummy, and Paramount wants to pay him around what he got for the last film. So they’ve stopped the soft prep until they all find common ground. In the long term, this amounts to a hiccup, because there is no way Paramount doesn’t make this film and no way they would do it without Cruise, who receives an eight-figure upfront sum against break even back end. There isn’t even a heated rush here, because McQuarrie has just started writing the script that he and Cruise worked out and production won’t begin until January.

Small speed bump, both sides need this movie to happen... Cruise probably has more leverage, but Paramount should also push to keep the budget close to 150m.

Well, Cruise can't put it off too long at his age (if he wants to possibly do another one later on), but, yeah, this shouldn't be more than a speed bump in the pre-production of this movie.
Unless both sides get stupid...

Very much on board for another McQuarrie MI. I already wrote why I liked MI:5 so much in the reviews thread. Probably the best since the first (which largely benefits from Brian De Palma's style).

The sad part of that stunt is that it was such a small thing. I get that it's obviously crazy fuck to do... just... I dunno... I kind of hoped it was a bigger thing to the overall of the narrative. Hell of a way to start it off though. Deep down I just wanted more of that thing cuz it didn't look easy or cheap to do.

Tom Cruise Closes 'Mission Impossible 6' Deal, Pre-Production to Resume (Exclusive)
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hea...ossible-929294
Light the match and cue the music.
After contentious dealmaking halted pre-production on Mission: Impossible 6, earlier this summer, Tom Cruise is on the verge of closing his deal to return to the Paramount action-thriller franchise.
Cruise’s return for a sixth installment in a movie series that he has been toplining and producing since 1996 seemed like a no-brainer, but negotiations with Paramount took an unexpected turn with the studio, which was co-financing the movie with Skydance, digging in on things such as backend profit participation.
The project was heading towards a January 2017 start when the pause button was pushed.
Now sources tell THR that issues have been resolved and Mission is being re-started. Spring 2017 will be the new start time.
Christopher McQuarrie, who reinvigorated the franchise with the fifth installment, wrote the script and will direct.
Paramount declined to comment.

Well, box office wise MI3 didn't do that great ($134M DOM/$397M WW). Backlash of Cruise's behavior during that time. Technically MI4 "reinvigorated" the franchise ($209M DOM/$695M WW). In fact, MI5 *only* made $195M DOM/$682M WW.

MI:3 was IIRC supposed to be the wrap up of the franchise.

3 seemed to usher in the style and tone that 3-4-5 have all kind of followed, at least in my opinion. Not really sure how anyone would attribute McQuarrie for reinvigorating the franchise though.
