A golden collection of quality pop/rock from a guy dismissed as nothing more than a trivial soap opera actor. The anthology's most glaring omission is what I regard as his best song, the majestic, emotionally resonant anthem "Tear It All Down" from 1989's Rock of Life.

I was at a water slide park today and Paris Hilton's single from five years ago came on. The one that's a rip off of Kingston Town. What a perfect waterslide park song. Best rip off ever!

To be fair, Rick Springfield started as a musician, then became an actor, then became a musician.

Beside owning albums by Shatner, Jovovich, and Springfield, I'll add Peter Gallagher, who not only sang in his movie debut, The Idolmaker, as well as singing on Broadway in many musicals, but also (finally) released an album in 2005 called 7 Days in Memphis.

It probably doesn't count (because she was never really a "famous" actress), but Colleen Fitzpatrick played Amber Von Tussle in John Waters' Hairspray, then became the singer of the band Eve's Plum.

Milla Jovovich's album is a trip, in a good way.

The first thing I thought when I saw the thread title was Milla Jovovich, then William Shatner.

But if we're using child actor/adult musician as legitimate for this thread, then I submit Phil Collins.

Such a great pop song! Unfortunately, the rest of his stuff really sucked.

I'm digging the stuff from actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead (along with Dan The Automator)

band: Got A Girl
album: "I Love You But I Must Drive Off This Cliff Now"
recommended track: "Did We Live Too Fast"

That's true. I suppose he doesn't apply here.

Surprised there's been no mention of Jared Leto and 30 Seconds To Mars. Not may favorite band but they're not terrible and they've been fairly successful.

Ricky Nelson if he counts or not, should count considering he started out as an actor.

William Shatner: Has Been is an amazing CD. His other stuff is not that good... I think he used a different producer and it all fell to shit. Scarlett Johansson doing a Tom Waits cover CD was just dreadful.

And then there's this, which I got rid of several years ago, but not before burning a copy to CD:

To say that it's godawful would be praising it too highly. Here, listen for yourself:

And along the same lines, although I never owned their album:

One of my favorite new bands of the past few years. Taylor flat out rocks. Both of their albums are great.

Emmy Rossum has at least one album of standards. I don't know if it's any good, but she is a classically trained singer.

She & Him is one of my favorite bands. I own all their albums and really enjoy them. Nice laid back listening and I enjoy Zooey's voice a lot. Conan O'Brien also has some live albums from his Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television tour which I enjoy quite a bit for what they are too. I also have Jeff Bridges' self-titled album which I like. Haven't picked up his other albums though.

Re: Music albums by actors/actresses: Which do you own? Are they any good?

I think Minnie Driver can actually sing. Too bad the music she puts out sounds like something you'd hear in the background at Starbucks. Imagine the blandest form of She & Him possible. It's like... the musical equivalent of unflavored gelatin.

Kate Winslet had at least one single. Her voice isn't... terrible. But the whole production was pretty awful. It sounds it should have been a Celine Dion song - with the backing musicians and producers and all that - only Winslet showed up at the studio instead.

I've read a fair amount about Dig (the new Jason Issacs series on USA), and am surprised how few have mentioned that Alison Sudol (the girl with fire engine red hair, seen on most of the posters and ads) put out several albums as A Fine Frenzy. I really liked her second album, Bomb in a Birdcage. It was kind of Florence + The Machine-ish, only more understated. Not as over the top, which is what I dislike about Florence. I didn't much care for Sudol's follow-up album, Pines, though. It's a little too close to being something your local "listen while you work" station would play.

I think Brittany Murphy wasn't too bad, although we just have a Paul Oakenfold single and the Happy Feet soundtrack to sample from. Still, a talent needlessly lost way too soon.

Funny you should put it like that, because I've heard a couple Fine Frenzy songs playing on the PA at the Kroger where I work. I only knew they were FF after running them through Shazam.

Obviously I own all of Steven Seagal's music catalog, but that's about all I can think of.

I looooove Milla's album. It was definitely a pleasant surprise. She still posts a lot of music to her website and she's made claims to be working on a follow-up, but we'll see.

The only other one I can think of is Anthony Stewart Head's album, which isn't bad. Not great, but he does have a nice voice.
