Re: MTV developing Scream TV series

I'll give it a shot. The fact that they can't use the mask though makes me less interested. MTV should do a Fear Street series and bring back the anthology.

The new mask looks lame if you ask me. I'm still not sure how this is going to work as a series, but I've been wrong about a series based on a horror film in the past (Bates Motel).

You're wrong. It looks exactly like a Scream TV series to me. That is, if you go by what the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street TV series looked like in relation to their respective movie franchises that is.

Kidding aside, I don't mind that it's different, but it does look super generic. Scream was pretty young people getting killed, and this series looks to be that, but only incredibly vanilla looking (both in cast and tone). A trailer isn't representative of what a full series will be, but from what I've seen I won't be tuning in unless I hear some good buzz.

Now, that is an idea. Actually, for as silly as those books would read now, I think a lot of those stories could work with some retooling.

I wonder if the mask looks bad to many of us because it's just not what we're used to. The Scream mask is so iconic now, that any variation is probably going to be lesser in the eyes of long time fans.

You're right about keeping an open mind, but I would argue that with those other series I know I thought they sounded dumb, but then I saw some images and previews (for Hannibal and Bates) and had my interest piqued. Here, what they're showing isn't getting me enthused. Those first 8 minutes aren't horrible, but that's a low bar.

I wasn't interested in this at all, but Ti West (House of the Devil, Innkeepers, The Sacrament) said he directed an episode (or more?). I might have to check it out.

Did not know that. They should've gotten him for the pilot. They were originally trying to get Craven to do it, but settled on Jamie Travis (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1637474/?ref_=tt_ov_dr). I've seen For A Good Time, Call... which I enjoyed, but come on... get someone with a horror background, not an MTV background.

I watched the first 8 minutes or whatever MTV played the other day (my season pass picked it up) and it reminded me of the original Drew Barrymore scene plus smartphones.

I forgot this premieres tonight. I'll probably DVR it just for the hell of it but I don't have very high expectations.

Maybe partially but it still looks pretty lame.

It was supposed to. I guess on their budget, Bella Thorne is what passes for a big star to get killed in the opening.

Yeah, that's... an odd choice. Economical, I'm sure.

It's weird, this series isn't listed on Ti West's IMDB page at all, but he mentioned on twitter that he was directing "part" of the TV series. I'm sure IMDB will be updated in due time.

I'll check it out. Seems weird that Wiliamson isn't at least an executive producer though.

MTV was never really a source of decent scripted programming but their standards haven't gotten really bad in the past 4-5 years. I expect this series to be terrible.

Wasn't the original Scream also a parody?

I expect some kind of credit saying

Based on the feature film Scream or characters created by Kevin Williamson

Williamson doesn't own the rights to the film or characters. So I don't think he's going to get a dime.

The 8 minute clip seemed interesting enough to me to watch/record it.

Re: Scream: The Series (MTV) -- Series Thread -- premieres 6/30/15

I thought it was ridiculously mediocre. For something called Scream it had very little in tone with any of the other movies. The voice on the phone sounded lame, the mask looks stupid, and so far none of the teens are likeable. Really it feels like a generic slasher movie.

But I can't lie, I'm kinda curious to see what's going on no matter how mediocre it was.

Re: Scream: The Series (MTV) -- Series Thread -- premieres 6/30/15

Just started watching it.

Noticed that Kevin Williamson actually got a story credit and based on his screenplay credit. He's definitely getting paid for this show.

Also saw that Wes Craven got an EP credit.

Re: Scream: The Series (MTV) -- Series Thread -- premieres 6/30/15

I kind of liked it. For a basic cable show obviously geared towards 20-somethings it was actually not horrible. Some of the violence was quite graphic, especially the opening sequence. Lots of cute young girls. The one who is banging the teacher looks like a young Eliza Coupe. I liked this better than MTV's last attempt at a suspense show Eye Candy.

My recording cut off at the scene with the black and white photo on the screen at 67 minutes. Did anything else happen after that?
