I know I've wanted to live in the Pirates of the Caribbean world since I visited the attraction at Disneyland when I was 8 years old. I'm sure Depp is having the time of his life living in that world for several months at a time - huge paycheck or not.

Is the merchandising still hot for these movies? I understand that it does very well theatrically, but do little kids have Jack Sparrow lunchboxes?

Disney hires writer for 'Pirates of the Caribbean 5'
Jeff Nathanson set to script fifth franchise installment
By Justin Kroll
Disney and Johnny Depp may getting ready to set sail again as the Mouse House has tapped "Catch Me if You Can" scribe Jeff Nathanson to pen "Pirates of the Caribbean 5."
Jerry Bruckheimer is producing with Depp set to return as Captain Jack Sparrow.
Plot details are unknown, and it's not clear whether thesps from past installments, like Geoffrey Rush or Keira Knightley, would return to reprise their roles.
The "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise has grossed more than $3.5 billion worldwide with the 2011 "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" grossing more than $1 billion worldwide.
Though Depp has not yet signed on, Disney is currently developing a sequel to "Alice in Wonderland," and the actor has often said that as long as the material is good, he would be happy to return.
Nathanson is also writing the script to the DreamWorks adventure "The 39 Clues." He is repped by UTA and Ziffren Brittenham, Branca, Fischer, Gilbert-Lurie, Stiffelman & Cook.

Well, he started fucking up on only taking "good material" once he made the second one, so I'd expect any future entries to be as hollow as the last one, which was truly terrible.

EXCLUSIVE: With The Lone Ranger in the can, Disney, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Johnny Depp have turned their attention toward setting sail on a fifth installment underway of Pirates Of The Caribbean. While a number of pie-in-the-sky giant directors are being mentioned, here are three helmers I hear are on the short list. Fredrik Bond, who helmed The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman, has been a favorite of Bruchkeimer and has been rumored for some time. The hot new candidate is the Kon-Tiki directing team of Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, who just fell out of the Legendary Pictures film Spectral; and I am also hearing buzz about Snow White And The Huntsman helmer Rupert Sanders. The Kon-Tiki guys are the names I’m hearing most often, but no offer has been made and there will probably be a few more meetings prior to any of that happening. Production is being slotted for late this year or early next year, but the director will be locked within the next few weeks. Disney made an unexpected choice for the last film, Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides with Rob Marshall, and that grossed over $1 billion. Given the names here, they’re clearly looking to inject fresh creative energy to the mix. Stay tuned.

Rupert Sanders has a great knack for visuals. He just needs to improve his pacing. But these movies are usually bloated anyway so that'd be par for the course. I'd like to see him at the helm.

I want to see Karen Gillan play Anne Bonny in POTC 5.
And I shall be happy.
