I don't mind Ron Howard directing this. Most people believe Rob Reiner and Frank Darabont have done the best Stephen King adaptations. Ron Howard is kind of like them. Workman-like directors. They don't really have a signature style. They just know how to tell good stories. I would like to see a different screenwriter, though.

i'll probably get slammed for this, but i think Tarantino has also grown with each of his films. not right for this certainly, but i think his movies have progressed more and more with each.

i think he would be a good choice to take a very dense and thorough King read and turn it into something magestic.

Especially with seeing him do RD and PF and then give us Jackie Brown which is very mature even with it's genre beats. Later you get KB with DP...and THEN he gave us IB. Seems like he'll have some films that are just him having a lot of fun, which is good for us. Then he'll do something like JB and IB which really show a sense of "maturity" and growth in his filmmaking.

While I never finished the series, I can't see how Howard would be able to make this work. For that matter, I'm not sure how this would work at all, other than a multiple season TV show. Even then, I just can't see it keeping enough people interested to play the story out.
On the other hand, maybe that's why they are doing a movie/tv hybrid. Make money off the first movie or two, enough to finance the tv series.

No, but he did adapt Jackie Brown from Elmore Leonard and made a so-so book one of the best films of the 90s. I still think it's his strongest work.
And in defense of Howard, when he decides to try and do something different, the result is interesting. "The Missing" was definitely a departure from his "safe" style of directing, and is worth checking out.

Yeah, I've always fantasized about seeing these books on a big (or small) screen, but I don't want to see them get raped by a writer/director that make it their own. So I'm very torn.

Yeah, letting someone like HBO do a dark cartoon series (like the Spawn series they did) could be a great way to do this.

Lots of new information today . . .
Sounds amazing if they can pull it off. Like most in the thread, I am not sold on Ron Howard doing this series though . . .
Lots of new information today . . .
The plan is to start with the feature film, and then create a bridge to the second feature with a season of TV episodes. That means the feature cast—and the big star who’ll play Deschain—also has to appear in the TV series before returning to the second film. After that sequel is done, the TV series picks up again, this time focusing on Deschain as a young gunslinger. Those storylines will be informed by a prequel comic book series that King was heavily involved in plotting. The third film would pick up the mature Deshain as he completes his journey. They will benefit from being able to use the same sets cast and crew for the movie and TV, which could help contain costs on what will be a financially ambitious undertaking.

It's a very interesting and ambitious idea. Hopefully, the first film won't bomb or the first series tank in the ratings. A lot could go wrong.

So, it'll be like Battlestar Galactica only the "Pilot/Mini", "Razor", and "The Plan" will be in theaters.

They need to film it all LOTR-style... (meaning: all at once, with a tightly planned release schedule) but I doubt they'd be able to pull that off.

Re: The Dark Tower... a Ron Howard film (dear god, no)
I know that the "multi-media" blitz is quickly becoming popular (read: slaughter the cash cow) but I will say that I won't be able to follow it across the mediums and there is no way that the average J6P will make that effort.
While it can be very cool for the "fan-boys," cross-promoting across the mediums won't work for the masses.
I can see the first 4, possibly 5 books very vividly on film. After that I can't see the books translating to any visual medium. I would almost say that the later books would have to be abandoned and treated as another alternate universe.
Re: the suggestion of animating the series -- I have envisioned it as an anime (I also think Harry Potter would be better told in an anime-style format). I think that this would be the best way to capture the true essence of the characters.

Re: The Dark Tower... a Ron Howard film (dear god, no)
A couple of random thoughts after reading the article ...
It states that Ron Howard hasn't directed TV since the 1980s ... what about Arrested Development?
This strategy has been used before (not on this scale though) ... the X-Files movie was a theatrical bridge between the 5th and 6th seasons.

Interesting. I'd like to see it happen, simply to see if it would work well.
