Re: Official MST3K / Rifftrax / Cinematic Titanic DVD Thread

A bit of news about... Cinematic Titanic? The Mads updated the FAQ on their site yesterday and included this tidbit:

"Our good friends at Shout Factory will be handling Cinematic Titanic titles from now on, so you can be assured to get your CT fix very soon."

Some of their DVDs have gotten pricey, so it will be nice to have them back in print.

Re: Official MST3K / Rifftrax / Cinematic Titanic DVD Thread

There's a new batch of stretch goals for the Rifftrax Kickstarter. They're backer-driven, so you get most of them with a $1 pledge (provided they reach the goals), along with the 10 shorts that have already been unlocked.

They're at about 5,000 backers now:

5,500 backers: An MP3-only riff of a blockbusters decided by fans (Batman v. Superman, Civil War, Age of Ultron and Fantastic Beasts are the options). Riffers include Kevin, Bill, Mike, Bridget, Mary Jo, Janet Varney, Cole Stratton, Matthe Elliott and Ian Poter.

6,250: Mothra, Just the jokes version

7,000 Samurai Cop Blu Ray (for backers at $100 or more)

8,000: Westworld first episode

9,000: Star Wars: The Last Jedi riff

10,000: It's a Wonderful Life

There's a trailer up for MST3K's new season. Don't watch if don't want any of the movies spoiled:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5ct0Z2bQndM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Spoiler:

So we're definitely getting:
Reptilicus (1961)
The Time Travelers (1964)
Starcrash (1978)

I like how they show Jonah's character being brought into the experiment, not just a hapless victim this time. And that last line from Crow was perfect.

I'm sorta torn on the "origin story," since I kinda liked the "in medias res" way the original show started; you could start watching the show at any point. Basically, the them song was all the intro you needed.

However, "Mitchell" did show the transition from Joel to Mike, and the move to Sci-Fi Channel did introduce a lot of new plot, so there is precedent.

One thing though is I hope they don't go overboard with a story "arc" for the host segments. I preferred the earlier seasons that only had a loose continuity. When I'm watching the Sci-Fi Channel episodes out-of-order via the DVD sets, I'm left somewhat baffled, trying to puzzle out the exact situation Mike and the Bots are in.

Re: Official MST3K / Rifftrax / Cinematic Titanic DVD Thread

The latest Kickstarter update for Rifftrax includes a 20% off code. I assume it's backer-only, but for $1 you'll get that and a ton of other stuff.

I also got an update from the MST3K Kickstarter today with four more classic episodes. I believe my pledge level was originally promised 12 episodes, and i've gotten 18. Pretty sweet deal.

Re: Official MST3K / Rifftrax / Cinematic Titanic DVD Thread

I'll just do one last update on the Rifftrax Kickstarter. They've reached their final financial goal of $350,000. At this point a $1 pledge gets you these shorts:

The Tiny Astronaut
On Guard, Bunco!
Choking: To Save a Life!
The Snob
Buying Food
Goodbye, Weeds
Improve Your Pronunciation
Making Sense with Sentences
Cooking Terms
Shapes We Live With

And if you already own any of those, you'll get a $1 credit on your Rifftrax account. So you could essentially pay $1 to get a $10 Rifftrax GC, if you're already a dedicated buyer.

That $1 also gets you:
A MP3 Riffstravaganza with Mike, Bill, Kevin, Mary Jo, Bridget and a bunch of other people of a certain blockbusters (Batman v. Superman, Civil War, Age of Ultron or Fantastic Beasts).
Mothra MP3 Riff

And if they hit a few thousand more backers today, that #1 might include
MP3 riffs of the Westworld Pilot, Star Wars Episode 8 and It's a Wonderful Life.

Went ahead and shared it on my social media, better late than never I guess. Be cool to hit 9 or 10k for those bonus riffs.

They released the mystery movie title for the Kickstarter. The leak was right, its Doctor Who: The Five Doctors.

I'm going to see them in about two weeks in Omaha. I've heard it's a cool experience, they hang out with the fans before and after the show.

Going to The Mads is a lot of fun...you won't regret it. I had more fun at their show than the Rifftrax show that I attended in Nashville.

There's also a chat with Jonah and Joel where they'll watch the movie sometime that day.

Also, if you want to see it in theaters, iPic Theaters is going to screen the premiere episode for one weekend:

Re: Official MST3K / Rifftrax / Cinematic Titanic DVD Thread

Finally got off my butt and redeemed some of my Kickstarter rewards. Secured my account for the first episode screening this weekend, and have access to 18 old episodes including the first KTMA. I work and shouldn't do this, but will likely try to be online at midnight tomorrow to view it as it "premieres".

No. Crap. Hmmm, maybe I can try to fall asleep early and then wake up at 3 to watch it before work. Although I'll be on the road the last bits. If I try to listen while driving and never post here again, you'll know why. I love you all.

I made the mistake of getting tickets to a musical tomorrow afternoon, happening during the live Q&A. It will be added to my VHX account, but I'll miss it live!

Re: Official MST3K / Rifftrax / Cinematic Titanic DVD Thread

Daily Grindhouse has an interesting article about MST3K's sometimes contentious relationship with b-movie fans.

I mention it because it includes a bit about Stuart Galbraith IV's odd DVDtalk review of Cinematic Titanic'S Wasp Woman release:

No spoilers, but the revived MST is off to a great start! I watched the new episode three times.

It's funny that Stuart Galbraith IV has been upset about movie riffing for some 34 years now:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!to...3k/dNgewNob__M

Also funny is that he requested the Cinematic Titanic Wasp Woman release because he thought it'd just be a new release of the film with maybe a new transfer, completely unaware of Cinematic Titanic or what it was.

Regarding the article, I watched the behind-the-scenes extra on the Rifftrax Live MST3K Reunion Blu-ray over the weekend, and Frank Conniff touches on some of the points during a Q&A. He mentions that he never felt the show was a criticism of the movies, but more of a platform to use the films to add their own spin of comedy to. He also says that MST3K brought some films like Manos more into the public consciousness, but that they've gone on to have a life of their own.

I ended up only having time to watch about 30 minutes of the stream before it expires, but liked what I saw. Looking forward to the Netflix season, and my bluray set.
