Album sounds great. It's half "This is My Truth" (epic scope of the guitar sound) & half "Know Your Enemy" (lyrics are very pop music). A definitive step up from "Lifeblood".

"Lifeblood" was good. But a drastic change in style. Which is why it tanked. I love them though, especially "This is My Truth" so I'm definitely picking it up when I'm in England next month. Hate the first single though.

I like almost all of their stuff, and I did really enjoy "Lifeblood." That being said, I think this new album is pretty strong; it's rather short (~38 minutes), but direct and to the point. The only song I have a problem with is "underdogs," only because I think the chorus could've been a bit stronger. All in all, as much as I love "This is My Truth," this album may be a little better because it seems so focused.

I'm digging it, though not as much as Lifeblood (which I liked a lot), but I'm not disappointed in it in any way like I was with Bradfield's solo album.

Anyone know what the deal is with the cover and artwork of the album and what these jail-bait girls have to do with anything?

I think the album cover is hot. That's all that it really needs to be.

I've never figured out why this band has never had ANY success in America whatsoever. I know they don't have the most positive views towards the U.S, but hell, neither do the majority of popular American bands nowadays.

I think around the time when "This is My Truth" came out, they played in Chicago at the Metro, which is a club with about an 1100 capicity at most. And that was probably the height of their popularity worldwide. Now I know that not every band can "break" America, but you'd think that they'd have at least put a dent in it and still have their albums released here.

I know what you mean. One time I saw another great Welsh band, Stereophonics, here in Columbus. As an opening act. For a local band.

For a band like the Manics, they are so huge everywhere else, at a certain point there's no reason to even bother 'breaking' America. They can tour Europe and make more in five gigs than they'd get in 50 over here, not even counting travel and other logistical costs.

I had tickets to see the Manics (way back when they were touring for This Is My Truth) at a smallish club (1000 capacity, max), and they canceled the show due to the sudden death of one of their mothers - they haven't come back since...

I also don't understand why the get ZERO radio-play here in the States. Most of their stuff would fit perfectly on the local rock/alternative stations.

I'm guessing it was probably James' mother who had died. He wrote the song "Ocean Spray" for her, about the time he would spend with her in the hospital.

I have often wondered how its worthwhile for bands to play in the US.

the venues I see uk bands in hold anywhere from 300-2000 people. lets say average 700 people. $20 admission. that's 14K.

How much does the band get?
and then 2 opening bands, the 1st is normally local, and playing for beers.
2nd is medium size so would maybe play for travel money.

I don't get how they make money off this.

Travel to get to the US must be a chunk. lets say 4 guys in the band, 2-3 roadies, and a manager and 1 other person. thats probably 8K in flights.

Rental on a tourbus.

A lot of times (most times) the lable will pick up the tab for the US tour just so the band can get some exposure so they can be more successfull down the line - sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.

That makes sense for sure. So its a marketing effort by the label..

I'm seeing the shout out louds in July, the tickets are 10 dollars, and I think the venue holds 500 tops...
