Shins - Wincing the Night Away: Leaked 3 months before release?

How the heck does an album get leaked so early? It's not being released until January the 23rd.

Anyway I've heard it and it sounds like a more keyboard based release. Less guitars but the songs sound pretty good. Chutes Too Narrow was a grower and this one sounds like it will be too. And I will be buying this.

I hope this thing is a grower because my first 2 listens were very "eh".

Kind of off topic, but I asked myself the same question when I got A Perfect Circle's debut 4.5 months before it's release. Only difference was track titles.

LOL Nope.

The more I listen to this, the more I think this is the band's first misstep.

well, i love it!

for me, the shins have always been very hit and miss... a decent song here, but nothing special.

but this album is very solid, a lot of really good tracks, and its certainly a grower... i'm loving it.

Most labels send advance copies out around three months before an album's release date so that critics can have their reviews ready in time for the album's release.

But that just means it was leaked...not necessarily that it had gone out to critics.

The Shins are very hit or miss but sometimes they create moments of pure genius (the harmonies in Saint Simon for example).

I think the first Shins album will go down as one of the best rock albums of the 00's. The 2nd one was a slight disappointment to me, but I'm really getting into this new album. There are a couple of average tunes, but many are simply sublime and I'm just happy there are bands out there making these kinds of albums.

same thing happened with the new of montreal disc 'hissing fauna, are you the destroyer?'', which is to be released the same time as 'wincing the night away' but was leaked last month.

back on topic, 'australia' is the only track that actually sounds like the shins.

I don't get this comment. Other than the minor departure of Sleeping Lessons, Pam Berry and Sea Legs, everything sounds like the Shins to me. Red Rabbits sounds like Young Pilgrims 2 and A Comet Appears sounds like New Slang 2.

What a boring third album (save for the first third of the album and the song "Turn on Me").

I think the new album is the best thing they've yet done. I never saw what all the fuss was about for Chutes Too Narrow, but this one was solid right out of the gate, and didn't let up. Didn't even need to be a grower.

I think the Shins albums have gotten progressively worse. Oh Inverted World is by far their best album. Not a bad song on it. I give the new one a "meh" as well on first listen. Still, a Shins "meh" is better than 90% of music out there.

I'm torn between which I like better now: this album or Of Montreal's new one. I'm leaning towards the latter, but they're both quite good!

I'm off to purchase the new Of Montreal album today.

I bought The Shins album on release day.

The best two songs, imo, are track 2 and track 7.

As a matter of fact, "Turn on Me" (track 7) is my favorite song of the year so far. I really love it.

"Australia" sounds like a poppier Smiths song.

I'm not surprised it debuted so high. It was a slow week for new releases and the combined sales of the first two albums was over a million. They've graduated to about Green era REM popularity. Now whether they get to Out of Time level popularity remains to be seen.

Lots of great stuff on this album. The songwriting is typical Shins which is to say catchy, tight and majestic. I like the slightly heavier use of keyboards on it. The songs seem to be only slightly more varied than previous albums but with songs of this quality I certainly don't feel like they're treading water...

The biggest change to me is the production. As opposed to their somewhat lo-fi debut and very dry-sounding second album, the new one sounds absolutely terrific. The production styles really work for each song. This is my new headphones album.
