Tom Waits: Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards -- 11/21/06
from pitchforkmedia:
Tom Waits Gives the World Orphans
What do Tom Waits fans have in common with Daddy Warbucks? Both love to bring home orphans! Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards, a three-CD set of new and rare Waits material is due out November 21 on Anti.
The 54-track release includes a 94-page booklet and over three hours of music, ranging from waltzes to blues and Celtic ballads to lullabies. According to Waits, "Orphans [contains] rough and tender tunes. Rumbas about mermaids, shuffles about train wrecks, tarantellas about insects, madrigals about drowning. Scared, mean, orphaned songs of rapture and melancholy. Songs that grew up hard. Songs of dubious origin rescued from cruel fate and now left wanting only to be cared for. Show that you are not afraid and take them home. They don't bite, they just need attention."
(Hmm, perhaps Waits thought similar things about the fish he stuck down his pants in that memorable episode of Fishing With John?)
A number of tracks on Orphans were originally recorded for film and theatre, and some are reworkings of songs by other artists, including the Ramones, Daniel Johnston, Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, Leadbelly, Jack Kerouac, and Charles Bukowski. Waits produced the epic album along with his wife and long-time collaborator Kathleen Brennan.

Any of you who missed the Orphans Tour, you missed a great show. He played a few that will be featured on this new album.
Several of the songs were only available before on Soundtracks, compilations, and other artist albums, but are finally available together.
I almost wish I wouldnt hear anything about an album that I want until the week of release, because I heard about this months ago, and have been counting the days since...
Good Times.

I went ahead and downloaded it and it's good. My favorite tracks after a couple of times through are Little Drop Of Poison, Little Man, and King Kong.
They did a good job of putting the right tracks together and each of the 3 discs sounds cohesive and not like some box sets where the stuff runs together with no theme or stylistic cohesiveness.
It will be interesting to see exactly when each of these was recorded as all of them sound like they were recorded in the last 10-15 years. Definitely nothing sounds like it is from the 70's.

Money tight but I just bit the bullet and ordered this for an early Xmas present. Hell it's worth it for his awesome version of "Heigh Ho" alone. Can't wait to get this and put it right next to my Johny Cash Love God Murder box set. Partners in crime.

out of Target, Circuit City, Best Buy, and FYE, only FYE had ONE copy. It was 49.99 and the employee gave me a 3.00 off coupon.

The packaging seems like it will inevitably fall apart.
