Rented the first disc and just got finished watching it. Amazing show! I would have blind bought it if it wasn't for the high price. I also got the subtitle glitch (Eng. subs would turn on at the start of every chapter), but it stopped happening 1/2 way through the second episode. Yes, I have a P.O.S. Toshiba circa 1999-2000, forgot the model number. Might be time to finally upgrade that thing....

HBO is a pay cable service - this programming is created to drive subscriptions. They aren't doing it for free and they had original programming long before season 1 of The Sopranos was released on DVD.

Season 2 is confirmed. It is in production now, and will come back on in March of 2007. It will also, almost assuredly be the FINAL season of this great show, due to its astronomical budget.

You should have brought Fry's ad with you to Circut City. They have it for $59.99. Pricematch it, plus take another another 10% off that, which is another $5.90 off that, you're looking at $54 and some change for ROME.

Got it for 18.XX with a handful of trade ins at DVDPlanet. Excellent show!
One minor quibble (which really isn't a huge problem) - if I have the box sitting by itself the flap will not stay closed. I want the box facing outward so I just put another box set up against the "opening flap" and all is fine now.

Can someone explain how TV budgets work because I don't quite understand.
Rome's S1 budget was $100 million. Since there are no big name actors in the cast, I assume that a big chunk of this was spent on production design (sets, costumes, props, etc.). I read somewhere that the outdoor set for the city of Rome is about 5 square acres, making it the largest set EVER.
So what I don't understand is why following seasons would continue to cost so much? If the majority of the physical assets are already in place, why does it cost so much to keep things running? Wouldn't it be better to have the show run several seasons to recoup the investment?

However, the savings may not be as much as you would think. While the sets were all built for S1, there's no info on what exactly happened to those sets between seasons. They could've been taken down and stored, which would've required reconstruction costs. Besides, most shows have their sets built first season, or even first episode, but the costs increase each season due to increasing costs in other areas that more than offset the savings in sets.
Here's more info on HBO and possible seasons of Rome:

I'm sure everyone here knows this, but when you buy Rome, HBO is also giving away a free promotional disc witch features the first episodes of Rome, Entourage, Big Love, Deadwood and I think something else. Would have preferred to have had the first episode of Sopranos on there instead of Entourage, but oh well.

It is not included. It has its own thinkpack packaging with all of the shows on the front of the box in like a collage. You get this free with any HBO purchase at Best Buy. They want you to like the shows, and want to get you hooked....like a drug dealer.

Did you ask them about the HBO disc?
The lady at the counter gave me one when i picked up Rome there last week, but i know most of the workers there probably don't give a shit and aren't going to bother.
