For those who think this has been a golden age of documentary......

......with films like Capturing the Friedmans, My Architect, Winged Migration, Fahrenheit 9/11, I have just found out that Darwin's Nightmare will be released on DVD in France on 12th October.

I saw this film at the London Film Festival, with the director taking a Q & A. It is about Lake Victoria and Tanzania, and recounts how a new variety of fish was introduced into the lake in the '60s, which has now overwhelmed the indiginous fish and become the basis of a commerce that dominates the patterns of exploitation in the region. We in Europe call this fish 'nile perch' and there is a local industry which prepares the fish of sale in Europe, to which it is transported by a frequent shuttle of old Russian air freighters. I think anyone seeing this film will be shocked by the impact that all this has had on the local people, who seem to benefit not at all by being at the centre of this commerce, and are exploited mercilessly. The director, Hubert Sauper, said at the Q & A that he felt uncomfortable being there because he 'didn't have any A's'. I have been looking forward to this film being available on DVD.

Another documentary that I would *LOVE* to appear on DVD is The Undergound Orchestra , which I saw a few years ago at The Cine Lumiere in London, and has really stuck in my mind. Does anyone know anything about it?
