DVD International Board Must-See Films List

I don't know if this already exists, but I searched and didn't find one, so if it does, please lock or delete it.

Anyways, I think its a good idea to have a thread like this. Post the film, the country, whether its available in region 1 or not (and if not, where one can purchase it), and a brief synopsis/review if you'd like.

I'll start us off:

The Inheritence (Arven), Denmark, Region 1 - One of the most powerful dramas of 2004. The Inheritence has beautiful shots, amazing performances (Ulrich Thomsen, most notably), and a great, great ending.

And Blueprint... is that the low-budget horror film she did? *off to imdb*

Edit: Fascinating premise! What's the definitive release?

The German/Swiss disc is...but no English subs. There is also a very cheap Russian disc whch has English subs. I am not quite so sure how legit it is. The film is very good (I liked it) and I am puzzled as to why no one cared to distribute it.

Thank's. I thought the disc was not subbed...and opted for the Russian copy (in fact this was one of a few German discs that I inquired about and was told that there were no subs). Thank you again for the photo.

I agree about Kekexilli: Mountain Patrol great movie. Where can I get the better release? The old transfer and presentation was simply horrible.

I liked this movie, but it would have been so much better if the actors hadn't pretended they could speak English by reading their lines phonetically. This is the only case I can think of where I've actually wished that certain scenes had been dubbed by professional voice actors.

By better (aka non-mainland) release, I believe Geoff was referring to the higher-priced (but still a bargain) HK release which is available through Yesasia (among other places?). They also sell the cheaper mainland $5.99 version which I (and you) own (as it was the first official release of the title).

23 - A very suspenseful German movie and the only hacker movie which is not completely stupid. Based on a true story. Don't know if there is an English friendly DVD out there.

Here's the link to the HK release of Kekexilli . One of my top 10 films of 2005

I haven't seen the HK released DVD yet... But there's no way in the world it could be worse than the mainland china version.

I didn't realize this was a sticky

1. Skenbart / 2003 / Sweden / dir. Peter Dalle: Think a crazy hybrid of a film that combines the directorical styles of Bergman, The Coen Brothers, Tati, and Marc Caro/Jean-Pierre Jeunet. A hysterical romp of a film that follows several individuals on their trek to Berlin in 1943 - chaos and hilarity insue. (PAL-DVD)

I am thinking of getting the German release of Blueprint (as well as Creep from the UK -- I know an R1 is being released but don't think the quality will be the same). How is the transfer on the Blueprint disc?

The only thing i'd argue is that THE BOW was great. I didn't like it much at all. I liked 3IRON, SPRING SUMMER, SAMARIA, though i found some of his other work to be a bit iffy (COAST GUARD, THE ISLE, ADDRESS UNKNOWN, BAD GUY).

BITTERSWEET LIFE was amazing.

JAPANESE
Kitano: (DOLLS, A Scene At The Sea, Nobody Knows, Kids Return)
Bullet Ballet
After Life (Koreeda)
All About Lily Chou Chou
Swallowtail Butterfly
Audition (not as good as it's hyphed up to be though...)

HK

Peking Opera Blues
Suzhou River
