You know what? Film-strip aside, you can't tell what printing you have even when you look inside the book, as there is no printing info, or the typical title page.

I only know I got a first print because of the film strip.

Has anyone seen/compared the reprint? It appears to be a bit smaller but otherwise comparable. I'm in on this one since I never pulled the trigger on the original.

Re: The Stanley Kubrick Archives

don't know if they got hold of some old inventory of the original pressing or if this is closeout on the 25th anniversary pressing but B&N has this on their website at $19.99

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/boo...ean=0641953968

SOLD OUT
didn't expect it to last long at that price
ISBN# (ISBN-13: 9780641953965) was different than the original first printing release (ISBN-13: 9783822822845) and the reissue (ISBN-13: 9783836508896)

Re: The Stanley Kubrick Archives

That was a good deal -- not surprised they didn't last. Either way, these books are great (incl. Bergman) -- hopefully Taschen has another one teed-up.

Re: The Stanley Kubrick Archives

For those who can't get enough Kubrick -- Taschen has this lined up:

http://www.taschen.com/pages/en/cata...never_made.htm

Stanley Kubrick's Napoleon: The Greatest Movie Never Made

Ten books in one tell the strange tale of Kubrick’s unfilmed masterpiece

Tucked inside of a carved-out book, all the elements from Stanley Kubrick's archives that readers need to imagine what his unmade film about the emperor might have been like, including a facsimile of the script. This collector's edition is limited to 1,000 numbered copies.

For 40 years, Kubrick fans and film buffs have wondered about the director's mysterious unmade film on Napoleon Bonaparte. Slated for production immediately following the release of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Kubrick’s "Napoleon" was to be at once a character study and a sweeping epic, replete with grandiose battle scenes featuring thousands of extras. To write his original screenplay, Kubrick embarked on two years of intensive research; with the help of dozens of assistants and an Oxford Napoleon specialist, he amassed an unparalleled trove of research and preproduction material, including approximately 15,000 location scouting photographs and 17,000 slides of Napoleonic imagery. No stone was left unturned in Kubrick's nearly-obsessive quest to uncover every piece of information history had to offer about Napoleon. But alas, Kubrick’s movie was not destined to be: the film studios, first M.G.M. and then United Artists, decided such an undertaking was too risky at a time when historical epics were out of fashion.

TASCHEN’s sumptuous, limited-edition tribute to this unmade masterpiece makes Kubrick’s valiant work on "Napoleon" available to fans for the first time. Herein, readers can peruse a selection of Kubrick’s correspondence, various costume studies, location scouting photographs, research material, script drafts, and more, each category of material in its own book. Kubrick’s final draft is reproduced in facsimile while the other texts are tidily kenneled into one volume where they dare not interfere with the visual material. All of these books are tucked inside of—or shall we say hiding in?—a carved-out reproduction of a Napoleon history book.

The text book features the complete original treatment, essays examining the screenplay in historical and dramatic contexts, an essay by Jean Tulard on Napoleon in cinema, and a transcript of interviews Kubrick conducted with Oxford professor Felix Markham. The culmination of years of research and preparation, this unique publication offers readers a chance to experience the creative process of one of cinema’s greatest talents as well as a fascinating exploration of the enigmatic figure that was Napoleon Bonaparte.

*Includes exclusive access to searchable/downloadable online research database: Kubrick's complete picture file of nearly 17,000 Napoleonic images*

About the editor:
Alison Castle received a BA in philosophy from Columbia University and an MA in photography and film from New York University (NYU/International Center of Photography masters program). The editor of TASCHEN's Some Like it Hot and The Stanley Kubrick Archives, she lives in Paris, home of the world's best cinemas.

A mere $700. Coming November.

I remember I read about that on their site years ago then heard nothing more. $700 is too steep for me though.

Yeah, um... pass. I'll wait for the re-packaged re-release for $50-ish. No way can I afford that mammoth thing.

I'm going to guess a reprint will happen though sometime, right? Surely a book that sells for over $2,000 wont stay out of print forever. I can't imagine spending anywhere near that price range with what I currently make.

Re: The Stanley Kubrick Archives

I see they now offer a 69.00 Godfather family album, so I guess Napoleon will come around someday. $700 Taxi Driver book just came out too.

Re: The Stanley Kubrick Archives

Noticed the Taxi Driver book -- wouldn't mind thumbing through it. I liked the movie just not $500+ like. They also have the limited versions that are like $1500 ea. Ridiculous! For that price they better be signed by Deniro, Foster, Scorsese, Keitel, Andy Kaufman, Christopher Lloyd and 30 random cab drivers!

^ Wasn't even aware of that -- looks interesting. Note that it isn't published by Taschen (Thames & Hudson, rather). Anyway, reasonably priced under $40 at Amazon.

I just got it. It's huge. 16.5" wide. Makes it sort of difficult to read.

Just noticed this today as I walked past the front window display for it in the Taschen NY store. Looks really cool, but at $700 (or ~$600 after tax on Amazon/BN.com), I cannot justify getting it. Hopefully, there is a pricing error on it somewhere that I can seize upon or it drops to a more manageable price ala Kubrick Archives at some point. I don't care about the photographer signature, so I'll keep my fingers crossed for a second printing.

Re: The Stanley Kubrick Archives

I just stumbled into this: there is, in fact, a reasonably priced second edition of the Napoleon book coming! List price is $69.99 and can be ordered from Taschen here or pre-order from Amazon for $44.09 here. I'm probably not going to rush out and buy one, but I'll certainly keep it in mind as I've long been fascinated by Napoleon and I'd love to see Kubrick's assessment of the guy.

Re: The Stanley Kubrick Archives

I went to pre-order at Amazon and wasn't getting my Prime shipping. Is it fulfilled by Taschen?

I see this - Special Shipping Information: This item is not eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping.

But that shouldn't affect Prime right? Or would it?

Re: The Stanley Kubrick Archives

My friend bought this years ago and just found out it's selling for up to $600 on Ebay. So, he's considering selling it to pay for some bills. I remember when he bought it. It's certainly a nice book but I didn't expect it to ever become that rare.

Yeah, I'm going to have to order this one too.
