Whose cover of "Little Wing", Derek and the Dominoes, Sting, or The Corrs?

I think the Guns and Roses cover of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" is one of the most abominable covers I've ever heard. The concept of subtlety is completely lost on Axl Rose.

i think they said it was derek and the dominos
on the radio they said both title and artist, and i was typing as they were listing titles.

I'm sure it was. My question wasn't exactly serious.

Are you sure the Eight Miles High was not the version by Husker Du?

Is this a "cover" or Hendrix's take on a traditional song?

I'm sure that's the cover they were referring to. I don't know of any other notable covers of that song.

Star Spangled Banner? No way. Hedrix's version of All Along the Watchtower is the best rock cover period, and I can't believe a guitar magazine overlooked it! That's crazy! It's in every damn Viet Nam war movie ever made!

As for Little Wing covers, I like Stevie Ray Vaughan's better than the original. No annoying glockenspiel, no lyrics and it's about 4 times as long.

I have two that I consider greatest covers because they take the original and make it completely their own.

Already mentioned: Jimi: All Along the Watchtower

and

Joe Cocker: With a little help from my friends. I love the beatles, but his version of this song blows the beatles away.

Are you kidding? I've got this issue at home so I'll go and check for you, but I'd be willing to bet $100 that it was NOT Derek and the Dominoes. Obviously when you think of Little Wing you think of two artists: Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. SRVs cover is one of the most transcendent instrumentals of all time and has the power to completely stop me dead in my tracks every time I listen to it. While I haven't heard the Derek & The Dominoes version I can without a doubt guarantee that the SRV version blows it away. I would put it in my top 10 songs of all time list and if we're talking instrumentals it would slide in at #2. Believe it or not I'm actually offended by this

Too many classic rock cuts there... Here are some of my favorites:

Big Star's cover of Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale"
The Pixies' stomping version of Jesus and Mary Chain's "Head On"
Devo's wacked version of "Can't Get No Satisfaction"
The Ramones version of "Surfing Bird" which is completely ridiculous and perfect
Soul Asylum's great version of Neil Young's "Barstool Blues"

I'm honestly not familiar with Stevie Ray Vaughn's version. I'm pretty sure that for most classic rock fans over a certain age, the only two versions they think of are Hendrix's and Clapton's.

Add Big Star's cover of "'Til the End of the Day", Teenage Fanclub's cover of "Like a Virgin", and Aztec Camera's cover of "Jump", and you've got the perfect cover album, IMO.

I prefer the live version without the silly backupsingers for GNR's Knockin on Heavens Door. Specifically when they originally played the song at the....Ritz?

The Derek and the Dominoes version sounds like country music compared to Hendrix. Must be that Allman touch. SRV does blow it away. I love Clapton, but I never really liked that version of Little Wing.

I definitely agree with the Joe Cocker cover. That's probably my #2 also.

A few others I thought of:
Fiona Apple doing the Beatles' Across the Universe
The Neville Brothers doing John Hiatt's Washable ink and of course Bonnie Raitt doing John Hiatt's Thing Called Love

CSNY's cover of Joni Mitchell's Woodstock is a classic.

The Beatles doing Twist & Shout is another.
