Birth of a Nation release question...
I'm just curious what people have to say about the Image release of Birth of A Nation. I see it has a short documentary on it....am I right? how is the picture? I realize it's an 80+ year old silent, but i don't want to buy it if it looks like complete shit....
Any opinions? And please, i'm not asking for any "oh that's racist trash" comments...so don't post them. start a thread in Movie Talk if you want to discuss the film....
what about this version? It supposedly has a collectible poster and is only $6.99...but i'm assuming its crap.
And finally, what about the Kino Griffith Box? I'm assuming in the end that this is the version to get....Am i reading descriptions right in seeing this release is 20 minutes longer than the Image one? the kino lists 207 minutes, the Image 187....of course CH only carries the Image release

If it’s less than $10, then it’s absolute crap.
The image and kino releases both have the same transfer and are as good as it’ll ever get. The Kino has all the extras of the image and an extra disc with civil war shorts and other stuff. So it all depends if you want extras.

Kino's has the best image quality... it's from the same elements used for the Image/David Shepard DVD, but a new transfer. It also has a 2nd disc with extras (making-of doc, Civil War shorts by Griffith).
I'm not sure about the score, though. I'd expect it to have the original Joseph Carl Breil score.

I assumed the cheap version was shit, but thought i'd include it just to see....I'm mostly interested in comparisons of the run time and picture and score for the Image and Kino releases....So far I have one vote for they're same, and one vote for Kino having a better transfer....anyone else have any input? I'd just as soon get the Image release and netflix the second kino disc...but if the Kino is noticiably better, then I'll suck it up and go with that one.

You might want to consider the Kino Griffith box set which includes this - it's a stunning collection with hours and hours of extra material, and one of the true treasures of my collection.

Unfortunately, the Kino box is just out of my league right now and for the foreseeable future....It sounds like I can't really go wrong with the Image disc and I can get that along with Way Down East from CH.
I have a question regarding the tinting though...when you look at the comparison on DVDBeaver it's hard to tell from their phrasing whether the sepia/blue/red tinted transfer of the Image and Kino releases is right, or the black&White R2 transfer is. Anyone have any info on this? If the tinting wasn't done by Griffith? when and by whom was it done?
