The thing is at $2,999 with a free dvd recorder. Costs $200 to ship, but they don't collect sales tax in my state, and there is an 8% discount for Realtors for some reason. Anyone know anything about these?

Wow, that looks nice. This is just a thought though, not to take anything away from a nice set like that; Gateway has the 210 DLP projector for $1,898 with a 3 year protection plan (or $99 less without) Even if you go ahead and get an extra bulb for $350 you're still only at $2248. Then use the rest to pick up a nice screen and you could have a very nice say...100" picture. That would be sweet. No dvd recorder though..

Or the DLP BenQ PB8230 is at $2,499 (2500 lumens and a contrast 2000:1!) Ok.. I'll stop now..

If it were going to go into my tv area, I might do that, but this would be part of the "wife" area, and she wouldn't go for the projector.

Looks like the Dell 3200mp scores much better and is under $1600 for a projector.

kvrdave,

First and foremost let me say this is ONLY my observations, so please no harsh retaliation.
Ok, then, Gateway themselves are only a computer company. They in no way, shape, or form manufacture or produce these DLP tv's (by the way the EDTV plasmas they sell are made by Sampo). I also am almost positive they don't even use the T.I. DMD chip. If I am not mistaken, it is a Maverick DMD. All Gateway does is pretty much slap their badge on it and distribute it as their own. A company called Delta Electronics makes the sets for Gateway. Don't get it because it's a little cheaper. You are going to pay for it in the long run. If you really want a DLP set, get a Samsung with the T.I. HD2 chip in it. After all, Dr. Hornbeck developed it FOR T.I. in 1987, so why not stick with the inventors?

Delta Electronics gets the bid:

There are a few threads discussing the Gateway DLP at www.avsforum.com including comments from actual owners.

Why you dirty sonova.....

No problem. I would still need to see one and see some reviews, but I am really looking for a middle of the road one, anyway.

Thanks for the post.

This was just posted over on avs

Jones I just left Gateway about 1 hour ago. I found out they had a Gateway on the floor and i wanted to take a look. The set was selling for 2999. and a free dvd recorder to boot. I wanted so much to like this tv, I would have had it in 8 days if i liked it. I even took my dvd of Finding Nemo just to play in case they didnt have a good signal coming in. The darn thing was horrible. I would not have known it was DLP if they didnt tell me. I currently have a 61" RCA on the way and would have gladly cancelled the order if this set even looked half as good as the Samsung at Best Buy. Although i have never even seen the RCA, I ordered it becasue after seeing the 50" Samsung at Best Buy, and seeing that 50% of the people here think RCA has better picture than the Samsung i took a chance. I tell you what If that RCA looks like the Gateway did its going back as soon as i can get them to come get it. Its so bad that I would not even take it for free. I would not watch that thing if it was in my house. It was darn near irritating. The DVD of Finding Nemo looked terrible also. I asked if they had set up the tuning and they told me that they had. I gave up a free 300 dollar dvd recorder and the 700 dollar difference for the RCA, so that tells you how bad my experience was. Wish they call me tomorrow and tell me that the set wasnt set up correctly or something cause if it looked anything like the Samsung Id get it in a second.
Sounds overboard to me. It can't possibly be that bad.

That does sound a bit overbaord to me too. I am not so sure 50% of the people prefer the RCA over the Samsung either. The RCA is very hard to find so most people havent seen it. I have seen it but didn't give it a long enough look to be able to comment.

The Samsung DLPs are definitely at their best when using the DVI input. I suspect the Gateway might benefit from that too.

BTW, thanks for pointing this model out. It seems you get 56" instead of 50", excellent PiP and monitor features, in exchange for possibly slightly less picture quality for much less than a Samsung, etc.

Dave, here are two threads about the Gateway DLP:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=336871

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=330693

The Samsung DLP is pretty popular over there, so I'm sure there are some tough comparisons. I have the 46" Samsung and love it; as does my wife.

I'd go check one out at a Gateway store and also take a look at the Samsungs. These sets aren't cheap, but you do get what you pay for.

ANy reason not to go for a regular crt-based rptv? Apart from a minor size difference, the crt units will have a generally much better pq and be cheaper. DLP technology is getting better but not quite there yet IMO.

Really mixed reviews, but there always seems to be "audiophiles" who like to crap on anything that isn't perfect just to show how refined their tastes are. My guess is that this set could do everything I could ever ask for and I wouldn't notice any downfalls.

Personally, there probably isn't a real reason to go dlp instead of crt, unless you will use it for computer stuff, don't want to worry about burn in, prefer the smaller size, and don't want to worry about convergence issues ever again.

The size would be the big one for me.

And 1 other reason: because the level of ambient light in your room is high. DLP's tend to be a lot brighter than CRT rear projection displays, allowing you to watch in rooms with big windows or skylights.

dlps also seem to have a much better viewing angle. Not quite the same as plasma, but not far off.

I believe they run all their ads for a week, or until they are out of the freebies.
