Im in search of a good place to order DVD's from Canada for shipment to the US.

I would like people to share prices/shipment/problems etc.

I have found a good place to order music CD's (www.mymusic.com) but haven't found a good DVD source..

I have found that TAU is really slow. My order in either early June/July 2001 is still backordered...an IMAX title. Other titles, new releases were shipped within a couple of weeks of the date of purchase...still a bit slower than I had expected. However, they have responded to my emails regarding the IMAX. Still waiting however...I may get by the end of THIS year...maybe.

I like www.absound.ca too, but they did have quite a large security safu which allowed people's credit card numbers to show up on their website. I had to get a new number for the credit card that I had used there. They claimed they have fixed the problem.

In my opinion, there are no good Canadian online retailers. The best of the worst is hmv.com and A&B Sound.

The worst of the worst, unless you are rich and spend hundreds of dollars a month on DVDs is C&L or CNL - whatever they call themselves. Although they have an excellent selection (the best I've seen, they seem to carry every title) and a few very good prices, the customer service is HORRIBLE. And god help you if you order a disc that is defective because they won't believe you. The store in Burnaby, close to where I live, is set up like they are in the business of selling firearms. You have to be buzzed in the showroom where steel doors slam shut once you enter. As you shop they watch you constantly. They have every right to protect their product from shoplifters but they could be a bit less obtrusive and creepy about it. And if you think I'm exaggerating, read there own forums.

Borrow a digital camera or if you have one please please PLEASE take a picture of this place. I"m deeply intrigued on the store front and how it looks like.

Sorry, but I'm not going back. Maybe someone else might take up the challenge.

When you enter the front doors there is a small lobby with a desk where people can pick up their pre-orders. Behind the desk is the employee's entrance to the showroom which can be shut off with huge metal roll-down doors. If you want to actually get into the store you have to tell them your customer number. After that this big metal door that looks like the kind you would find at a bank is eletronically unlocked and you enter what looks like a small warehouse. There is rows and rows of DVDs all set out nicely with specials alongside the walls. There are NO price tags on any discs, you have to look each up in their catalogue.

The warehouse itself is like walking through Attica, with two or three clerks staring daggers into your back as you try to peruse the isles. I used to bring a list of stuff to look for, but that makes them even more suspicious so they constantly badger you to "help" out (ie. get you in and out as quick as possible). All of the clerks I've encountered have this weird "Moonie" look - fake smile, nervous, like they think they might have to tackle me at any second in case I might use my list to obscure a DVD while I shove it down my pants. There are cameras everywhere too and the room is kept icy cold so middle income people like me won't over stay my welcome.

I would be frightened for my life going in with a concealed digital camera for fear of being caught. I wouldn't be surprised if they had some kind of flogging room aside from the showroom.

And if you e-mail them about something you always get strange cryptic responses - usually no more than one sentence. I enquired about why they were selling Anchor Bay's Suspiria and Opera for the exact same price when the American retail price for each was ten dollars different. They answered my inquiry with "Yes". That was it. What the hell does that mean?

Actually, if you are in the Burnaby area, go ahead and try them out, it's an experience unlike any other.

Geez the C&L made good reading! I went down there for some midnight madness sale they had. Of course I picked up all their loss leaders only but the were kind of busy and were filing people in & out of the showroom. I picked up Matrix for like $14 I think (about $10 yankee dollars). Then I noticed they must have taken a big loss from it as they posted right on their site "Deposit $800 into your cutomer account and get Star Wars for free!" - While supplies last... what's that mean? You think many people at all will deposit $800 with them?? Anyways that's the last time I shopped with those hosers! Too much greed & mistrust in that place!

So I still stick with Total Action Universe & actually A&B Sound.

I've only had one experience with them, but it was very good. Due to some recent reviews about the superiority of the Canadian release of "Ginger Snaps", I ordered this last Monday. It arrived here in California on Thursday via first-class mail, just 3 days later, which is amazingly fast for a package from Canada, in my experience. Anyway, the price was good, shipping was reasonable. Total cost after conversion to US$ was $19.09.

I find DV-Depot to be excellent. Top notch customer service and they have their own forums where you can talk to staff etc. By default they also open each case and wrap the disc so they don't get damaged in transit, you can request that discs are left sealed if you want.

I've ordered 100's of dvd's from them and can't recommend them highly enough!
