They don't play the national anthem before soccer matches in Europe. It is a good idea.

Are people forgetting that Kaepernick walked away from $14.5 million with the 49ers - he opted out of his contract.

Right now he is currently unemployed and this is the reason.

I agree. They should only play the anthem for major events. Like a championship game. The NFL is even worse with all the Navy/Air Force flyovers and such. Which they actually don't pay for.

This Cleveland police thing is beyond stupid. Don't cops who work stadium/arena games typically get Overtime pay (and the team is paying for it)? If they really want to protest, then don't work the games. Nobody is forcing them to. That would really send a message.

NFL Kickoff Game Ratings Take A Hit From 2016 As Patriots Lose To Chiefs

With a 14.6/25 in meter-market ratings, the beginning of the new NFL season was not exactly a winner for the league and NBC.

Numbers are down "a sobering" 12% from last year’s kickoff in 2016.

I give zero-fucks about sports - other than using them to be sociable and have fun sometimes.

Anyone notice that soccer is becoming more popular? 10-15 years ago, soccer in the USA was a joke. I see it (local leagues/teams/games and fandom) around a lot.

I've been hearing about the growing popularity of soccer since the mid 80's when I was growing up and that's what all the kids were playing. It never translated. It's a niche sport here like hockey and I don't think that's ever going to change.

They are currently building a big soccer stadium here in town. I've definitely heard more about it in the last few years than ever before.

Yeah soccer has been the next big thing for a very long time. It's not going to happen anytime soon. All the best talent right now are playing in Europe. US fans aren't going to follow European leagues en masse for a number of reasons. Soccer will only turn the corner if MLS starts attracting the best talent in the world and we're nowhere close to that.

I just noticed that everyone is driving around with "Phoenix Rising" bumper stickers. For several months, I thought it was a video game or Star Wars reference. Then I looked it up a few days ago, and it turns out it's a local soccer league.

Soccer is big in Seattle, but the timing roughly coincided with losing the NBA. It can't compete with the NFL or college football, of course, but it's arguably more popular than a losing baseball or college basketball team.

Or if by a similar miracle, the US Men's team was to win the Gold Cup like many got into Hockey after the US Hockey team won the gold.

When they built a small arena in my area everyone locally was walking around as if they had been hockey fans for decades. That was like 15 years ago. Now no one really cares anymore.

When I travel to Miami I'll sit at a bar or restaurant and soccer is almost always the sport being watched. Most of the U.S. really doesn't care about it.

I will be more enticed to listen to these guys when they stop taking game checks to prove their point.

Re: National anthem protests top reason NFL viewers tuned out

The NFL's biggest problem is the product on the field. The game has become bloated and boring the last few years. I don't need to spend 3+ hours watching 30 minutes of actual play while listening to Phil Simms saying dumb ass shit. The college game is kicking its ass right now in entertainment value. Add soccer into the mix and it's got an even bigger problem. I've never played soccer or thought of watching it, but I'd rather go watch FC Cincinnati (lower than MLS) for 2 hours than the NFL at this point.

And...it's crazy that Kap has been blackballed while people convicted of horrible crimes get a second, third, fourth chance. Just another reason for me to avoid the league.

Well, they keep saying he's a shit player on top of the protests. i mean, they don't even hide the fact that a "good player" can get away with whatever the fuck he wants to do.

As long as it's not speaking out against injustice for minorities.
