Re: New Orleans Begins Removing Confederate Monuments, Under Police Guard

I'm all about history, but I think the fact that the KKK was using them as rallying points was the deal breaker for me.

Stolen from Twitter:
You can't be anti-participation trophies and pro-Confederate statues. They are the world's biggest participation trophies.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Good Riddance to Confederate Monuments at NYTimes.com

I say good riddance. Confederate monuments should be housed in a museum. We cannot run from history, nor should we try. But as Americans we should not celebrate intolerance, division and hate. And we should move on.

Can someone tell me what is being done with these statues? I read somewhere that they were being sold at auction. That seems dumber and more likely to cause problems than leaving them up.

They're all going into the secret stash room of the old Nazi from Apt Pupil.

I thought they were going to be relocated, not sold.

Interesting discussion taking place on C-Span's Washington Journal call-in segments right now (archived for easy viewing later since it airs at 7 AM EST).

Today's Viewer Call-in segment is "Do you Support/Oppose Removing Confederate Monuments?"

The host always reads from national newspapers & shows clips of speakers such as New Orleans mayor at beginning and randomly throughout the segment. One excerpt came from a an op-ed by Deroy Murdock asking if monuments to slave-owners Washington, Jefferson, and Grant would also be removed.

Does he think this is specifically about the individuals depicted in these monuments?

Re: New Orleans Begins Removing Confederate Monuments, Under Police Guard

I hope they get auctioned off and thrown in a scrap yard. Would be fun to see a few rich guys show up at a ho-hum government auction and bid them up.

I could see them being consolidated to a museum too. Not a bad way to go.

...

If there were enough outrage, sure Washington, Jefferson, and Grant could go. It's not sacred. Pesky democracy.

When the museum becomes the rallying point for white supremacy then what do you do?

That's civil. I was going to recommend holding an event, locking the doors, and burning the place down.

As soon as I saw he posted, I was like "here comes the opposing viewpoint!"

Yeah, and when are they going to take down the monuments to Benedict Arnold and Julius Rosenberg!?!!? Hypocrites!

As a side note, I was out at Mt. Vernon last weekend. When you wander the grounds, you see lots of evidence of slavery, and it is presented frankly. There is no attempt to sugar coat the fact that Washington profited off the forced labor of men and women who were held in captivity. No attempt to romanticize the cramped and sparse quarters in which these men and women were forced to live, separated from their loved ones, as somehow being symbols of "states' rights." Understand that, and perhaps you will start to understand the fallacy in Derry Murdock's argument.

Re: New Orleans Begins Removing Confederate Monuments, Under Police Guard

The civil war was not about slavery and the Confederate Battle flag is not currently a symbol of racism!

That Dukes of Hazard thread was very enlightening!
