What changes are needed in the Democratic Party?

There are two things to consider:

Who will be the next chairperson after the recent Democratic National Committee email scandals?

Are they ready for a change in leadership?
Nancy Pelosi is facing a tough challenge within her own party after another disastrous election cycle for House Democrats.

What do you think will happen to the Democrat party after President Obama leaves office?

Re: What changes are needed in the Democratic Party?

If this election showed anything, its that people are tired of the old guard.

The dems MUST get rid of Peolsi and Reid first and foremost.

They need an energizing enigmatic candidate in 2020. There's a pretty good example of one in the White House right now.

That would be a good start I think.

Re: What changes are needed in the Democratic Party?

The Democrats need a candidate in 2020 that is charismatic and has good character (as close to a squeaky-clean record as possible). They need a leader that inspires the best of his followers. He/She needs to be a clear and stark counterpoint to Trump. This person must be gracious, but fiery when the occasion calls for it. This person needs to put Trump to shame just by deigning to be in the same room as him.

They essentially need someone who has a revolutionary spirit like Bernie Sanders who can sell it like Barack Obama.

Re: What changes are needed in the Democratic Party?

As for the Democratic Party in general: they need to toss the Clinton playbook. Abandon nominating people who were in Bill Clinton's constellation. Clinton is toxic. Al Gore lost. Hillary Clinton lost. They're going to have to go back to the roots of FDR and find his spirit again. They can't continue on being "Republicans-lite".

Michael Moore was right: you have to give the Democratic Party back to the people. In fact, I think the DNC should hire Moore as an advisor--he seems to be more in the know than the people who thought Hillary was going to be a slam dunk.

That's the one piece of advice in this thread they're most likely to follow.

No changes needed. I love what the Dems are doing!

Run Trump. He's no more a Republican than he is a Democrat at heart. Have him hit Pence with a steel chair out of nowhere 15 minutes into the 2020 State of the Union and unbutton his shirt to show a donkey. Cory Booker, Howard Dean, and Elizabeth Warren can then run out and they'll spray paint dNc on Pence's back and it is ON for 2020! It'd make about as much sense as the 2016 election did.

Judging from many in another thread that is where our Pres-elect should be.

I predicted that after a charismatic Obama the next president would be a wonk / accountant type or someone from business.

I never imagined it would be a Donald Trump.

I was imagining a more low key type almost boring.

I was thinking more like Mitch Daniels (I live in Indiana and a conservative). He is kind of a numbers guy.

I don't think he would take the pay cut from were is now as President of Purdue University.

The genie is out of the bottle. You are describing the type of candidate they should've put up in 2016. Unless people get tired of Trump's schtick, he has set the new normal.

Look at what's popular on TV... over-the-top "reality" shows that are such a distortion of reality that people don't even know what is actually real anymore.

The Dems need a candidate that is loud and bombastic, and can yell really well. How old will Howard Dean be in 2020?

They need to stop generalizing people. Hell just be opposite of the establishment. And stop trying to offer free shit because that isnt going to happen.

Also, dont forget about the rural people.

I know you're joking. But I kind of agree with this.

If there is "no going back" to more stable and reasonable establishment politics, this may be the new norm. Republicans just elected Trump. Who would the liberal equivalent be? We need the most snide, arrogant, douchebag liberal who's going to "tell it like it is" (you guys can probably think up names better than me). Someone who's voice goes up as they end every sentence, as-to indicate they might be --- asking a question?.?. Then we'll have Trump's liberal equivalent.

Re: What changes are needed in the Democratic Party?

The Dems tried to be the Liberal equivalent of Trump. They lost, bigly.

IN all seriousness, if Dems go the way of imitating Trump, they will certainly lose any chance of winning a 2020 Presidency. And probably further.

Like others have stated:

1) Kick Pelosi out

2) Get Reid out

3) Embrace a Bernie-style agenda, but try to be more center.

4) Don't make race an issue. It failed.

5) Make policies the main issue. Drive home what Trump does wrong in the Oval Office...not on a golf course.

Re: What changes are needed in the Democratic Party?

More focus on local politics, not national. The Dems need to establish themselves better at the foundations of government and get their base more active. More governorships, more focus on senate and house races, particularly in purple states. And they need to work to undo gerrymandered districts and improve voter access. Basically they need to start playing the game better than the Right does, because popular opinion is on the Dem's side if they could only organize around it.

Also, they need to stop listening to conservatives. They need to go to war because the right isn't interested in working with the left and they've only ever been rewarded for it. The left dies on their principles again and again.

Finally, less focus on identity politics. The left already has these voters and the right isn't going to take them.

They want her...they can have her.

Can't wait for tax increases in California, like the gas tax which is coming. Pelosi and all of her Democrat Elite supporters in California can have a great time justifying their policies.

On the contrary, Dems need to double down on racial issues. What they need to avoid is running crusty old white people at the top of the ticket with a slightly younger and less crusty white person in the second spot. One or the other is fine, but they need to commit to diversity with the other spot.
