Yes, we lawyers are known for our reasonableness. We've derailed creek's thread long enough.

At least we know that praying is no more effective than wishing and hoping.

I would expect any decent person that believes in prayer, or any other form of good vibes, to ask for them to be sent in the direction of everybody that is in danger of being affected by a disaster like a hurricane. This isn't some single event like somebody trying to deal with cancer, it's a storm that will affect millions without discrimination.

Do we have any hard numbers on how many prayers God needs before He will spare those in the path of the hurricane?

That said, isn't there a different thread for Christian-bashing? Some of these recent posts don't exactly seem to be in the spirit of "idea exchange" and therefore feel a little thread crap-y.

Fair enough, and I apologize. I actually think prayer can be a wonderful tool for building community and facilitating mindfulness and self-reflection. The idea of prayer as a telephone to God to let Him know that, "hey, it turns out I really don't want my grandmother to die of cancer can You please fix that kthxbye" really rubs me the wrong way, but I apologize for any offense I caused with my overly glib post.

Re: Christian Idea Exchange

I'm already working in the Houston area via Harvey. We are sending peeps to stage for where ever (or all over) Irma hits. We are trying (as much as possible) to respect where people live. Since I live in Texas (Dallas) I'll likely stay here in the Houston area. Tho no certainty of that.

I do pray on a (somewhat) regular basis. But I totally respect those that send good vibs, well wishes, "be safe" etc. I have heard from half a dozen friends and family just making sure I'm ok. And I appreciate it all!!!

Everyone be safe and take care of each other!

Pray, meditate, give good vibs, it is all good!

They wanted to drive out, but gas is in too short supply, so they'll be riding this one out in Jacksonville area.

Prayers for all those affected in Florida and elsewhere would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Christian Idea Exchange

We got a call today saying that our pastor's daughter and son-in-law were able to get out of Savannah and, I believe, make it to get their parents and kids. At any rate, they are on I-95 heading out away form Jacksonville.

Thanks to those who prayed for their safety and please continue to pray for all the evacuees that they will reach safe zones and continue to pray for those left behind and for those who have already experienced devastation from this and other recent storms.

Re: Christian Idea Exchange

Thank you, Bandoman. I talked to both of them this morning, and it was a bit of a harrowing experience for a while. They decided to take some backroads at some point to avoid the interstate crush, but a lot had the same idea and the traffic was bumper-to-bumper.

We already have our church Samaritan's Purse volunteers gearing up for trips to Texas and/or Florida.

Re: Christian Idea Exchange

Stirring exposition of the way God has designed men to be completed by women when joined in holy matrimony. Excellent illustrations showing how a biblical marriage should work with the self-sacrificial, adoring love of a husband for his wife.

Some key points:

1. Many young men today are not prepared for marriage nor seeking marriage, choosing to either delay marriage or eschew it altogether in favor of personal pursuits. The maturity of these young men is stunted by their self-absorption.

2. Man's loneliness is the first thing in the Bible proclaimed to be "not good." Although the creation of man himself was a good thing, God purposefully left him incomplete without a helper who would be his equal but offer complementery attributes.

Title: Man, Designed Incomplete.

Text: Genesis 2:18; Ephesians 5:25.

http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninf...ID=91017131078

[Interesting: Some of the points were driven home (no pun) right after worship services were over by two young men who tore up the road by the church speeding and with the driver leaning on the car horn. They pulled up at the intersection with road above the church right behind a young mother and teen daughter; then they cranked up the music to the max, began leaning on the horn again, and began yelling a sustained "F-bomb" at the top of their lungs (but still easily heard over the music AND the horn). This was followed by a sustained "F-bomb you!"...again, distinguishable over everything else even though I was a good distance away. I followed our church members home to make sure they were safe...I'm sure she was pretty rattled, and her husband said she didn't mention it to him for fear of worrying him (although the daughter did tell him what had happened).

I just thought of the lack of maturity and irresponsibility of the young men (who were grinning and laughing when they passed me as I was walking up the hill right before the cursing incident) and how much it reinforced the lessons from the sermon.]

Re: Christian Idea Exchange

First Good News Club meeting of the new school year today.

Lots of familiar faces and a few new ones. Really gratifying to see how much of the gospel message was retained by such young kids and how excited they were to have us back. Lots of hugs and fist bumps all around.

Prayer requests from these kids are often funny and sweet but sometimes sad and disturbing. Some of these little guys and girls come from really challenging and difficult home situations, and it's nice to be able to show them attention and love.

How about a Statement condemning men who marry divorced women? That's adultery.

Re: Christian Idea Exchange

Some of you may remember a prayer request for a young lady who was in a comatose state and not given long to live a while back. We receive regular updates from her college friends and have encouraged to hear of signs of improvement (even being able to swallow is a major advancement) and ability to respond to stimuli, smile, etc. Thank you for your prayers...continued prayers are much appreciated by the family.

Here is a local news story posted in a local paper about five days ago recounting her story:

Johnson City Family Searches for Hope as Teenager Battles Mystery Illness

Olivia Bailey

Posted: Sep 12, 2017 03:07 PM EDT

Updated: Sep 12, 2017 03:11 PM EDT

BRISTOL, Tenn. - A 19-year-old is in hospice in Bristol, and it is still a still mystery why she is so ill.

Emma Harrod and her family is now finding strength in faith and community.

"She just loves to laugh," Emma's mother, Jodie, told News 5.

Emma's family describes her a source of joy. Even her goal to become a midwife shows her will to serve others. As a college freshman, Emma accepted a volleyball scholarship to Bryan College.

Emma's father, Mark Harrod, said, "She was someone who wanted to try anything in the school setting. Her senior year she joined the chess team, but had never played chess in her whole life."

Last November, Emma suffered a terrible headache that never went away. Instead, it worsened with a series of seizures. At one point, Emma was in a coma.

"Her illness came on without warning. There was no prediction, no precipitating factors, no cause that can be pinpointed," Mark said.

Doctors in both Johnson City and Knoxville tried for months to pinpoint a diagnosis.

Jodie said, "Just when we thought it was getting better and they had determined it was meningitis, then she just took a turn for the worst."

Doctors are still unable to identify an exact illness. The family is now getting care for Emma at Wellmont's Hospice House. With community support, they hope to bring her home in December.

"We have to have an additional room to our lower level and a bathroom that is accessible to Emma," Jodie said.

The family is also relying on their strong faith to get them through the next steps for Emma. Mark is the pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Jonesborough, and he told us the church has been a resource for providing some comfort in their time of need.

Mark said, "We don't know what the outcome will be, but we believe that with God's grace, we will keep pressing on and see whatever that is and know that he will supply what we need at that time."

Emma is also a graduate of Providence Academy in Johnson City. The volleyball team is dedicating their varsity game on Thursday, Sept. 21 to "Bring Emma Home." The game against Happy Valley will start at 5:30 p.m., and all of the proceeds from the concession stand will go to assist the Harrod family. Those in attendance will also be able to donate to the family directly.

Anyone wishing to assist the family in their accommodations to the home can find information here.

Re: Christian Idea Exchange

Interesting guest speaker tonight at our family night supper at church. He is the interim president at a Bible college that has existed for about 70 years.

One of the most interesting points he brought up was how one of the pastors who teaches classes there (who also happens to be the father-in-law of one a young woman who is so close to us that she calls my wife "Mom2") teaches weekly classes at a prison about an hour away in Virginia.

One fascinating fact was that one of the inmates who was paroled wanted to know if he could come back into the facility each week to finish the course work in the theology class in which he was enrolled.

That Christian researcher has a parochial viewpoint. He says that the world will end 33 days after the eclipse. It doesn't matter to him that there eclipses in other places in the world every few months -- the one he could see from his home was the only one that mattered.
