Re: No wikileaks discussion?

This Wikileaks is seemingly becoming a major issue. Is there precedent for the government to shut them down(hope not) or is the info they show in some sort of "public domain"?

Re: No wikileaks discussion?

The person that runs the site is not an American citizen. I'm not sure what compelled the army guy to download and hand over all the data.

Re: No wikileaks discussion?

The responses to this latest leak that I've seen fall into one of the two following categories:

(1) "OMFG Wikileaks is the worst thing ever and it places hundreds if not thousands of people in physical jeapordy and someone should just kill Julian Assange."

(2) "To bad for the US, if they want to be two-faced to foreign leaders they can't bitch when they're caught, and transparency is good for democracy."

I think the problem lies not with Assange and Wikileaks, but with a system that (a) categorized far too much info as "top secret"; and (b) allowed too many people to have access to it and did not do nearly enough to safeguard that info.

Re: No wikileaks discussion?

I haven't really followed it. My guess is really doesn't leak stuff from governments that share his political ideology.

Re: No wikileaks discussion?

I was under the impression he's 'wikileaked' everything he could get from anywhere and everywhere.

Maybe that's not accurate.

To be fair, "Top Secret" documents from Italy are probably along the lines of "Top 10 Hottest Porn Stars".

This was tried. His site went through a massive denial of service attack that failed. Some think it was the feds who tried it. Evidently, they are not aware that the information has already propagated all over the internet.

Yes, he's allegedly not exclusively interested in American intelligence.

Re: No wikileaks discussion?

What happened to the child porn allegations against this guy, which he claimed were an obvious government effort to discredit him?

Re: No wikileaks discussion?

I'm more interested in what people think should happen to the person who gave the documents to wiki.

I have read that he could face 50+ years if convicted. What does everyone think? If he is guilty what should his punishment be?

I say if he is guilty throw the book at him. I know to some it seems harsh but people who have access to such documents and are entrusted to keep them private need to know there will be harsh penalties for violating that obligation.

If it can be proven that one person died as a result of the leaked info, he could potentially face the death penalty. If he is guilty, I agree, throw the book at him.

They should also look into whoever was in charge of IT security. Apparently there are programs that provide alerts when someone downloads large/many files.

Re: No wikileaks discussion?

The question you have to ask is: "Could a more open and transparent diplomacy be beneficial?"

Excellent article here:
