He was arrested for a different kind of leakage?

Who here would support waterboarding this guy?

Just for fun, I mean. I'm pretty sure he is a greater threat than some of the folks at Gitmo, with some meaningful intel.

From what I heard on the news at lunch, yes. Sweden has extremely strict "rape" laws. Strict might be the wrong word - broadly-based would be better.

If the woman says, "I'll only have sex with you if you use a condom," and you don't use a condom, then yes, absolutely. I'm pretty sure it'd be a crime in the US, too -- if a woman objects to the conditions under which you're having sex with her, even if she agrees in principle to have sex with you, it's rape.

if the woman says "wear a condom" and the dude says "no" and then she has sex with him anyway how is it rape?

They said it would be rape in Sweden if the condom tears during sex.

The news report also said that the two women also Tweeted about how great the experience was afterwards.

There, I said it.

The charge is "espionage without a condom". I guess the penis cam doesn't work with a condom on.

re: wikileaks/Julian Assange discussion [Merged & bonus poll added]

It seems he was staying with a woman in Sweden who he slept with on the first night then stayed on a few more days. He slept with this other girl a little later and she rang the first woman who then took her to the police station to report that he hadn't used a condom in their morning-after sex session. The first woman now claims that he deliberately broke the condom he used when he banged her. Seems the case was dismissed at the time as lacking evidence of wrongdoing. It has now be resurrected for some reason. On an unrelated note it appears Sweden is quite happy to extradite to the US based on previous incidents..

Yeah, the chief prosecutor originally dismissed the rape charge and arrest warrant. Then there was an appeal, a special prosecutor reopened the case and re-issued the warrant. Some believe that the US is behind this and want Sweden to extradite Assange to the US where he could face charges under the Espionage Act.

This guy's story has all the ingredients of a James Bond story: International espionage, stolen top secret data, rough sex with slutty northern European broads...yet somehow it's not remotely sexy.

Also, who would have thought the Swedes would be the ones to show up with the draconian sex laws. I thought you could fuck on a street corner in Stockholm.

You can, but you have to use a condom.

I just read a UK Daily Mail piece that was linked from drudge detailing the events in question. It was pretty slanted towards defending Assange but it didn't mention any tweets like that. The closest one was by the woman he was staying with and who had the condom break, from the next day saying she was having a great time at the party she was hosting for him.

Saw the same article. Suggested that she attempted to delete that tweet later on.

Incidentally Sweden is a bit draconian when it comes to sex laws - prostitution is actually illegal there, which is a major step further than in our own country.

Of particular interest, at least to me is:
"One cable said Saudi Arabia was the key source of funding for radical Islamist groups including Al-Qaeda, the Taliban, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hamas. "

You're calling this guy a "prick" for exposing the information... when the disdain should be directed at those in power who had this information and sat on it. It should also be directed at those who committed the actions being exposed. But that won't happen because it is being written off as, "well everybody knows that politics and diplomacy are shady dealings"... and yet the whistleblowers are to be held to a higher standard.
What exactly is the source though?

I mean, supposed "intelligence" was saying how Saddam had weapons, portable chemical labs, and people were saying that there were connections to various terrorist plots, etc. If we had sat on this information would things have been better?

I understand the importance of defending whistleblowers who bring to light illegal activity and wrong doing, but this seems to be someone with an agenda who's compromising our security.

Only after the fact, did we find out alot of it was lies, half truths, and exaggerations.

I'd kill this man if given a decent chance. Only those with an elevated sense of self, or an elevated opinion of facts, would think that they need to know everything that's going on. Face it, shit happens that you don't need to know about. If you can't face it, at least admit that you think you deserve to know based on a false opinion of yourself. Relativism is a double-edged sword.
