Here's the speech. Spoilerized for length.
Spoiler:
Just as focused on personal responsibility and devoid of politics as any reasonable person would assume. |

But seriously, I still find the notion of the President, any President, giving a nationwide televised address specifically to school children a little creepy.

I wish he'd do a better job of talking to all of this way instead of doing so much.Bring back hope, change and inspiration. All this action only leads to disappointment.

Re: Republicans don't want Obama talking to children?
Seriously though. If he had mentioned he was going to talk to kids and released this none of this would have been a controversy. Instead he did what this administration seems best at - keeping things completely unclear and then blaming "extremists" for complaining when they can't seem to figure out what Obama's definition might be of "Telling the children what they can do to help him". For such a great communicator he's really terrible at it.

Re: Republicans don't want Obama talking to children?
People were freaking out long before the "Asking the children what they can do to help the president" business was over-emphasized by bloggers.

And if people were unclear about what was going to be in the speech, I'm guessing its because they thought members of his Admin who have been saying what was going to be in the speech for a few weeks now were lying or something. And have you ever given a big speech? Was it completely finished to coincide with the announcement of the event weeks away, or did you keep polishing it closer to the deadline? The text was released the day before the speech, as things like this often are. |

Re: Republicans don't want Obama talking to children?
Yeah, because this administration has proven they think things through. I would not be surprised if they changed the content of the speech because of public pressure, exactly like they changed the “study guide”. Regardless, by asking teachers to impress upon the kids the need to “help President Obama,” they made it look blatantly political.

Re: Republicans don't want Obama talking to children?
Seeing as I "want Obama to fail", I don't care what he wants my kids to help him with.
As it is my son thinks Obama is a douchebag and though I've warned him to not cause a scene I expect a call from his teacher.

Re: Republicans don't want Obama talking to children?
Which, me wanting Obama to fail or my son forming his own opinion, independent of my wife or I (my wife is a rabid socialist with communist leanings - seriously)?

And that's great that your kid has formed his own opinions, but to disrupt a class so much by expressing those opinions that you are actually expecting a call from your teacher shows what little respect he has for his teacher and fellow classmates. |
