I bet Glenn spends as much time debunking Birther myths as Keith Olbermann, that is to say, very little time. Why should he spend more? No rational person believes that Obama is a non-citizen, to quote Congressman Frank - it's like arguing with a dining room table.

Because people continually talked about it, and many public officials, and conservative commentators like Beck, didn't even try to set the record straight with the evidence that disputes it. Beck just laughs it off, not because he wouldn't like it to be true, but because he worries about some silly, unlikely consequences. But really, it's good for them to have people against Obama, no matter what the context. I bet a good percentage of the birthers watch Beck's show.

Basically you (and this website) are trying to portray him as a birther, mostly because he says other things you disagree with. You can act as if it's because he's not shouting "Obama is a Citizen" from the rooftops, but you clearly pick and choose the evidence of his transgressions (as you see them).

But did BigDave say a few posts back that Beck screams and hollers about what he believes all the time? So why wasn't he screaming and hollering about Obama really being a citizen? I don't think the satirical website portrays him as a birther, but he's just as ridiculous. He makes up phony nonsense on his show all the time. Wasn't he the one who talked about how the cars for clunkers program had the ability to take over your computer and make it government property forever? It's not about disagreeing, he lies all the time.

It's obviously comparing a lack of "proof" of Obama's citizenship to a lack of "proof" of Beck's non-raping of girls. It's completely retarded.

I'll admit to not watching Olbermann (I don't watch Beck either, I actually have removed cable television from my life lately). It's rather dissapointing that an educated guy like him can't find more important things to discuss than the rantings of lunatics.

You're basically complaining about Beck not devoting enough time to debunking something that's obviously false. If he thinks it's obviously false, and if he thinks there are actual legitimate issues facing this country, WHY would he devote anything beyond a minimum amount of time to this 'issue'? What should he do? The birthers don't accept the COLB as 'proof', they don't even think Obama went to Columbia. If you presented them with an 'actual' birth certificate they would just claim Obama isn't actually Obama. Manning believes Obama's father is Frank Marshall Davis!

What percentage of Americans believe that the government was behind 9/11? 1 in 5? How many think the moon landings were faked, or that JFK was killed by the CIA? Conspiracy theorists that thrive on the lack of negative-proof can never be convinced, they're best relegated to the fringes - it's where they belong.

I think the real reason that all this birther nonsense gets so much coverage is some groups would prefer that legitimate opposition to Obama get lumped in with the LaRouches, James Davis Mannings and Alex Joneses.

I've never denied Beck says plenty of ridiculous things - he's a former alcoholic, never went to college and believes in Mormonism - the ridiculous should be expected. Instead of disproving things he's actually said, his detractors attribute non-existent positions to him and attack those.

If we're talking about people who self-identify as Republicans it's about 32% of the country. So if even 40% of them were hardcore birthers, you're still talking about 15% of the nation. Alarmingly high, but 50% of the country doesn't believe in evolution. A 2004 Zogby poll asking whether the Government may have been complicit in 9/11 found 36% agreed. We're obviously not that smart, I've stopped being surprised by it.

I pretty much agree with your post, but I don't think most of Beck's detractors attribute as many non-existent positions to him as Beck would like to believe. He'll take a caller or two or whatever and then he'll lump that person as being ALL of his detractors, and it's just not true. Beck is false about a lot of things, he doesn't get facts straight. I'm not saying he's a liar, he's just misinformed or doesn't care about facts a lot of the time.
