The One and Only "Gay People are Angry at Obama" Thread

Spurred on by the release of this poll:

I thought maybe other people had opinions on how Obama is being lazy on gay rights. One of his campaign pledges to the gay community was to repeal DADT and allow openly gay people to serve in the military, but he's been dragging his feet.

Now that 69% (!) of Americans support this (including +12% and +11% shifts among conservatives and weekly churchgoers, respectively) how can he still justify this?

Add to this his total silence on all of the marriage equality progress and the weirdly tone-deaf gay jokes. What's going on? Does he really not care? Is the Human Rights Campaign getting to him?

During the campaign, both he and Hillary (and, for a while, McCain) were making pretty strong overtures to the gay community. You decided that only Obama was sincere. I think you're now finding out whether you were right.

And also what Groucho said. Expect a lot of outreach in about two years.

President Obama just appointed a Republican Secretary of the Army who supports repealing DADT. I don't think this was unintentional. I expect DADT will be gone within the next year or so.

That's exactly my point though. I can understand the marriage thing; I don't have to like it, but I understand it.

The DADT repeal is just ridiculous. 69% of Americans support ending it and he still doesn't do a damn thing about it.

I'm not surprised, personally. While this is obviously a big issue for the gay community, it is a very weak issue for most everyone else. Sure, we support you being in the military, but if I don't see the issue in front of me, I don't give it a second thought ("me" being the general public). The economy is something I think about daily.

It's possible the American public supports all sorts of things that the entity that will have to actually deal with it, the military, doesn't. Kind of like opinions on closing Gitmo and then their opinion when they find out that they may have the prisoners jailed near them.

I knew that Clinton wouldn't have done jack-shit for gay people. She's totally wrapped up in the DC/HRC/Democratic clusterfuck.

It looks to me that he's trying to use his new-president-power to actually get stuff done...health care, green stuff, regulation, etc. Going to bat for the gays is going to result in decreased power so he's probably stalling.

I'm sure he'll do something about DADT in a year or two. Hopefully.

It doesn't mean that the public has voted and military decisions will be made based on that vote. It means that the person elected will make military decisions based on public opinion, in my opinion. Gitmo is the first test.
