Yeah we are crazy Americans where we just might kill you if you threaten to kill one of our citizens and then point guns at him. I guess the poor pirates can't have it both ways where they want to be taken seriously when they threaten to kill, but then not to have it taken seriously when things don't go their way.

And I'm not sure but I believe there is a bit of risk associated with the whole pirating gig... maybe that's just me though.

modern sniper sights can probably compensate for the movement and the wind

I'm not sure it could have been done days ago, at least not without putting the captain's life at significant risk. After 3 days in a lifeboat surrounded by a couple of heavily armed U.S. navy vessels, I'm sure the pirates put up much less of a fight than they would have on Friday.

Bottom line, I'm not going to second-guess an operation that was as successful as anyone could have hoped for.

True, we're likely to see an escalation of hostilities, but if they kill any US merchants, I think we would be justified in taking action along the coast, such as landings and punitive strikes against the pirate vessels in their village harbors. Hell, we should probably be doing that now, but we'll just have to see how the Somali pirates react.

It doesn't have to be "one shot, one kill." They just have to miss the captain (one report indicated he was in the water). One pirate was only wounded, probably NOT by intent.

I just saw a video on CNN.com that explained the situation in more detail. The lifeboat was being towed by the Navy ship and the snipers were positioned on the back of the ship, about 90 feet away. Three shots total were fired; three pirates killed.

for decades M1 tanks had the ability to shoot a laser to get the wind speed and other enviromentals. no reason special ops sniper rifles can't do it now

There's a much simpler way, IMO. Simply arm the merchant ships with highly trained personnel who can provide considerable security for the ships.

The problem with that - the merchant ship companies don't want to spend the money. They expect 15-20 coalition ships (in an area over 1 million sq. miles) to provide the protection. I believe you heard the crew members of the ship say just that.

MSNBC is reporting that Somali insurrgents have fired mortar rounds at U. S. Congressman Donald Payne in Mogadishu.

Apparently he & his wife had just arrived in the capital shortly before.
