Re: Joe Biden presents: stupid political soundbites
So has that WH translation of Biden's comments come through yet?

The WH press corps chuckled when the press secretary made by that lame excuse.

Re: Joe Biden presents: stupid political soundbites
I see the President is sending Biden to Bosnia. Or should we call that an 'exile.'

Looks like they just want to demonstrate that it's ok to go on a plane.

Re: Joe Biden presents: stupid political soundbites
I just hope Joe doesn't try to open a window mid-flight to get some fresh air.

Gibbs tends to be pretty shameless in his spin.

Re: Joe Biden presents: stupid political soundbites
WH press secretaries have a tough job. They all have different styles of "squirming." Scott McClellan just repeats the same thing over and over again. I've not seen anyone do the Gibbs defense though: "Yeah that's what he said, but what he meant to say was..."
I liked Marlin Fitzwater and Mike McCurry. |

Re: Joe Biden presents: stupid political soundbites
That's a remake of a cartoon printed about 25 years ago that starred President Reagan. Instead of Looney Tune gags, staffers with horrified faces were leaping to stifle him. But the speech balloon was identical.
I've looked for it before, but I couldn't find it online.

Re: Joe Biden presents: stupid political soundbites
It's early.
Speaking of Biden, he is a personable fellow (as was mentioned). I admire him for his devotion to his family & taking care of his kids after his wife died. Gaffes or not, I like Biden a whole lot more than "Pretty Boy" Edwards. We could have had a schmuck like him as V.P. I don't dislike either Obama or Biden personally except for their liberal policies & their support for reprehensible procedures such as abortion. Hard to listen to someone chastising a former administration for using 'aggressive interrogation techniques' on terrorist murderers while approving of dilation & extraction of a human being...especially when done at the demand of the child's mother. Maybe if they could explain their views of the "hard science" they love to tout as guiding their policies, I would listen. Instead, we get "that's above my pay grade" as the best explanation used to justify establishing life-and-death policies (which will undoubtedly also come into play when choosing Souter's replacement). |

Re: Joe Biden presents: stupid political soundbites
Acceptable interrogation techniques = abortions done in hospitals
Torture = abortions done in back alleys I'd rather have the former. |

Re: Joe Biden presents: stupid political soundbites
That explains a lot. Abortions, regardless of where they are done result in death. The harm inflicted on the interrogated is different between being tortured and acceptable interrogation techniques.

Re: Joe Biden presents: stupid political soundbites

The "comparison" is that regardless of how you feel about the morality or the effectiveness of using torture to obtain information, the most extreme cases used were against a handful of proven murderers. (Many of the other instances of "torture"...including sleep deprivation & "slaps" to the head...almost certainly do not rise to the level of what the average person would consider to be 'torture'). Also, the goal was to obtain information to prevent further mass murders. One can argue that the ends don't justify the means, but there is a considerable difference between attempting to gain critical intelligence from an "enemy combatant" who subscribes to no rules of warfare & 'torture' used for the amusement of prison guards. At least, I see a difference. Whether such techniques should be used is debatable--the analogy of whether opponents of such procedures would allow them to be used if they would save the lives of their own children is somewhat relevant (at least in determining under what circumstances people would change their attitudes toward the use of those techniques). The scene in the original "Dirty Harry" when Callahan stomps the injured leg of the rapist/murderer to obtain the location of the buried 12-year-old girl comes to mind. I know it's situation ethics, but it gives most people pause to think. Likewise, there is a difference (in rationale, at least) in an extremely rare abortion performed to save the life of the mother (some doctors say this is never necessary these days) and the vast majority (probably 99%) of abortions that are performed as a means of birth control. I've never understood the "back alley" argument; of course one would prefer that morally acceptable medical procedures be done in hospitals by licensed physicians. That ignores the issue of whether terminating the life of one's own child should be a "right". If one thinks it's fine, one should argue that. If not, then it's like saying you would prefer that unwanted children be killed "mercifully" by doctors through lethal injections rather than having the mothers drown them in bathtubs. Most people do not have a lot of sympathy for mothers who kill their children (unless they find them insane...and even then, the outrage is still present). If one thinks that abortion is morally wrong, then it's hard to find sympathy for a mother who dies as a result of killing her own children because she finds them inconvenient, any more than one would sympathize with the mother who drives her car into the lake to drown her children yet gets trapped inside the car herself. In the eyes of those who find killing children to be morally reprehensible, neither the "back alley" nor the clinic options are acceptable. We would prefer that the children be allowed to live in either case. That doesn't mean that we aren't concerned with the mothers (in fact, just the opposite...who wants to go on record as encouraging mothers to kill their children?); however, the mothers are in control of the situation. Therefore, the greater concern should be for the unprotected child who is at the mercy of his/her "mother" and the "abortion provider". |
