The question isn't whether or not you own a house or how many you own, simply whether or not you know how many houses (if any) that you own. The reason I ask is because i read a recent article where someone didn't know how many houses he owned.

I think you're misremebering. Democrats thought Senator Kerry's war record would protect them from charges of being soft on defense, and they were outraged by the specific attacks (personally, I think there's a special place in hell for anyone who wore a purple band-aid to the GOP convention, and I would be equally outraged if anyone tried to argue that Senator McCain didn't serve honorably and courageously). But I don't think I ever heard anyone say that Senator Kerry should be above any criticism.

On the other hand, if you criticize Senator McCain, Bob Scheiffer is right there to sputter and stammer that how dare you question the integrity of a POW.

The 'He's not like you!' attack just strikes me as absurd from either camp. Of course these people aren't in the average American's shoes. If you're running for president, you're for damn sure not an average American in terms of wealth, education, intelligence, etc.

for years anyone with military experience was beyond attack on their military experience. it was assumed that no matter what you did in the military it was relevant to being president.

in reality unless you are a 4 star general you don't really have much relevant experience to be president

I think in their own ways, Truman, Johnson, Ford, and Clinton were "regular guys". Of the four, Johnson was the only one who was wealthy when he became president. Truman was the last president to have not graduated from a college or university. Every other president of the past 70+ years was irregular in some major way - Reagan was a former actor, Nixon was socially inept, especially for a politician who achieved massive success, Ike was a career officer who (posthumously) became the second highest ranking soldier in our nation's history (after Pershing), and the rest were born into privilege.

How isn't Obama a "regular" guy? He's only recently wealthy and no where near the mega-rich status of the McCains. He was raised a middle-class kid. What's not regular?
