OK, I have a proposal for a rule for this forum. The rule is this: if you want to talk about someone, you use their name or their title. If you want to talk about the President, you call him Mr. Bush, or President Bush, or the President. You don't call him Bushy or Shrub or whatever. If you want to talk about the Senators from Massachusetts, they are Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Kerry. They are not "Kennedy (D-Chivas)" and "Lurch."

Personally, I think the "cute" nicknames do a lot to drive the conversation around here to the lowest common denominator, so I proposed they be banned.

Anyone agree with me? Think I'm way off base?

I have an opinion about this, but being a mod, I don't want to post it just yet and discourage anyone from responding to your suggestion either way.

I will for now.

Just seems like a lot more work for the mods. I'd also like to go one further and say please stop posting pictures of Kerry/Lunch and Bush/Monkey but that's not going to happen either.

Since I do this anyway, I would have no problem seeing others coerced into being as polite as I already am.

I see nothing bad that could come from such a ban and something good that could, so I vote yes.

I don't. I called Senator Allen 'douchebag' repeatedly because he's my Senator and he is a douchebag. I don't see the problem.

I frequently called Justice O'Connor "Madam Justice Wishy Washy." Why? Because it is for effect and maybe someone not familiar with it may wonder why, inquire, and learn something.

You can't even call a politician by their last name in shorthand writing? WTF?

Let's not go down this PC formality road. It's a casual discussion forum for pete's sake. Not the freakin House of Lords.

I wasn't suggetsing it to be PC. I was suggesting it because it annoys me to see people posting "political discourse" that looks like it came from a fifth grader. I mean, I think (soon to be former) Senator Allen is a douchebag too -- I never liked his politics and I certainly don't buy his whole "I just made up a nonsense word that coincidentally happens to be exactly the same as a racist term they use in my mother's home country!" schtick -- but if we want to talk about him, let's call him by name.

Anyway, like all good liberals, whenever something annoys me, I propose a law to ban it.

No, I'm just kidding. But I did figure that I'd see if most other people were as annoyed as me. Also, since the mods stated goal around here is to have more civil political discourse (a goal I agree with), and since I thought "Hey, here's something that reduces the civility around here," I figured I'd throw it out to everyone.

Also, I didn't mean to imply that I was proposing that honorifics must always be used. I have no problem with people talking about Bush and Pelosi and Alito instead of Mr. Bush and Ms. Pelosi and Mr. Alito, or President Bush and Speaker Pelosi and Justice Alito.

If it annoys you, don't post here then. Again, this is a casual discussion forum. Why do we need so many posting rules?

This whole proposal reminds me of the nonsense addressed in the Penn & Teller Bullshit episode on profanity.

Addressing Allen as Douchebag perfectly summarizes my feelings on the man. I don't want to call him Senator or Mr. Allen. Period. And believe me, if this proposal is enacted, I will certainly find loopholes around it.

I implore you to withdrawl your request, JasonF. Sorry, Mr. JasonF.

We should have to refer to all the other posters here as "the right hono(u)rable gentleman."

While our pinkies are extended holding our tea cups.

It is only a matter of time until I can't use my catchphrase for the masses in this forum.

I think the nicknames for politicians are pretty lame, but don't think we should get rid of them. If anything, they are very telling of the mentality of the poster using those names.

This is pretty much how I was feeling as I read the original request. The nicknames just sound like what Rush Limbaugh does to distract from whatever issue he's attempting to discuss - in fact, it seems a few of the names came directly from Rush.

I don't care for them, but I don't think it's serious enough to bog down the forum with trying to enforce a ban on them. As Groucho said, just look at the source.

I'm w/ Red Dog and Groucho on this one. They are lame but moderating it is going to a pain in the ass, plus it gives you an idea of the mentality of the person you are dealing w/ and whether or not it is even worth attempting a conversation w/ them.

Thank you. If someone doesn't want to converse with me if I call Allen "Senator Douchebag" or O'Connor "Madam Justice Wishy Washy," I couldn't give a rat's ass.

I hate to say it, but I agree with Groucho.

Even scarier is that I agree with nemein.

Oh and Red Dog, Carbon Blobs™ will always be allowed here. It's legally trademarked you know.

I don't believe offensive terms can be trademarked. See the Washington Redskins, so I'm sure PC will catch up with me in this forum at some point.

I'll still converse with you. I'm apparently another rapscallion for calling Allen Senator Macaca. I mean the Macaca moment will go down in infamy - its completely appropriate especially since Allen is just a regular Joe now thanks to the people of VA.

OK. I guess it's just me then.

It doesn't seem like a harder rule to enforce than "no generalizations" or "no personal attacks on other members," but I'm not a mod, so who am I to say what's a hard rule to enforce. No biggie.
