BREAKING : 8.0 Magnitude earthquake detected off coast of Mexico

Quote:
A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Mexico late Thursday, shaking buildings as far away as Mexico City and sending worried residents into the streets. No deaths were immediately reported.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 8 and struck about 60 miles southwest of Pijijiapan, off the coast of Chiapas State, near the border with Guatemala.

The United States Geological Survey issued a tsunami warning right after the quake hit. The quake was felt in the capital, Mexico City, and more than 600 miles from the epicenter, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center said.

Zhaira Franco, 35, who works for Facebook in social programming, said she heard an alarm 30 seconds before the earthquake hit her building in Mexico City. The building shook so much it hit the adjacent building, she said.

An aftershock with a magnitude of 5.7 and an epicenter about 50 miles to the northwest of the first quake hit 12 minutes later, the United States Geological Survey said.

We must watch different channels because it's been on national and local news.

I've had the news on all morning and they've been covering it pretty well. I mean it's done and information is still coming out as to the damage but Irma is still coming and it's one of the biggest mass exoduses in our nations history so yeah it's probably going to get some bigger coverage.

they should be fine as long as they dont run down to the beach or try and take a boat out of a harbor during the arrival time.

Yeah. I called and msged my daughter in the middle of the night. They aren't in a resort, so I wanted to make sure they were aware and paying attention--I could see my kids sleeping thru a siren. But nothing came of it and she's annoyed that I worried her. Sigh . . .

Biggest Earthquake to Hit Mexico in Over a Century Moved Fault by 32 Feet

https://www.yahoo.com/news/biggest-e...161322645.html

Quote:
The massive earthquake that hit Mexico late in the night of September 7 is the biggest in the region in almost a century. Seismologists now say the magnitude 8.1 quake was so large it moved the fault up by 10 meters (32 feet), as the Cocos and North American tectonic plates collided.

The epicenter of the earthquake was off the coast of Mexico and Guatemala, 54 miles southwest of Pijijiapan. It struck at a depth of 69.7 kilometers (43.3 miles), data from the U.S. Geological Survey showed. Initially, a tsunami warning was issued, with waves up to three meters (10 feet) high, but this has since been lifted.

most of the tsunami warning are for harbors. they get hit pretty badly (dollar loss/damage) even if the tsunami doesnt look like much.

Wow...anniversary of the 1985 quake and bam, another large earthquake in Mexico. They have endured two major earthquakes and a hit from a hurricane in just the past two weeks. I need to ask my Mom if our neighbor has family near the epicenter. This is just nuts, and Hurricane Maria has not even hit Puerto Rico yet.

Anyways all jokes aside this is very devastating.

The voices in that clip at the beginning were saying that "they need to get out."

Earthquake near Japan.
Quote:
It is the third major earthquake to strike around the world in the last 24 hours - following one in Mexico that measured a magnitude of 7.1, while another 6.1 magnitude earthquake stuck New Zealand.

Is this normal? Or is this a Trump-is-POTUS-antichrist-end-of-world-Jesus-on-his-way thing? That would seem about right. My life has been on the up lately.

Yes. There is nothing extraordinary about earthquakes. They are a perfectly natural occurrence. Just the earth doing it's thing.

What is not normal is being where earthquakes occur and believing that you can't be killed at any moment.

I travel a lot and it's always been interesting when I talk to people who live where they have hurricanes (cyclones), tornadoes, etc.. they all think I'm completely crazy for living where they have earthquakes. "Aren't you always worried.. all the time?". At least, they say, with hurricanes they usually have notice and can get somewhere safe. I tell them in earthquake areas you just get as prepared as you can and just go on with your life and don't worry about it. It's really all you can do.

I also mention that at least in an earthquake all your stuff is in one pile and not spread out over miles.. but it doesn't change many minds. Earthquakes pretty much scare everyone.
