Re: Hurricane Irma 2017

Quote:
With Texas still reeling from Hurricane Harvey and another storm barreling toward Florida, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is expected to run out of money by Friday, according to a Senate aide, putting pressure on Congress to provide more funding this week.

As of 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund, which pays for the agency’s disaster response and recovery activity, had just $1.01 billion on hand. And of that, just $541 million was "immediately available" for response and recovery efforts related to Hurricane Harvey, according to a spokeswoman for FEMA who asked not to be identified by name.

The $1.01 billion in the fund Tuesday morning is less than half of the $2.14 billion that was there at 9 a.m. last Thursday morning -- a spend rate of $9.3 million every hour, or about $155,000 a minute.

The agency would be out of funds just as Irma, a category 5 hurricane, might start thrashing the coast of Florida.

"If it’s down to $1 billion or less, then I would say there’s a great concern," said Elizabeth Zimmerman, who until January was FEMA’s associate administrator for the office of response and recovery. "Congress needs to take action very quickly."

President Donald Trump’s administration has asked Congress for an injection of almost $8 billion in additional funds.

The House is voting Wednesday on funding for Harvey. The Senate, which is expected to act this week as well, is considering whether to add a suspension of the federal debt limit to the measure. The legislation would then go back to the House.

Aggie here (screw Longhorns ) and I'll be chipping in. The school where I teach collected several thousand $ from our students for Harvey relief, I'm sure we'll do it again for Irma.

Stay safe everyone!

Good luck Florida. Tough to see another state about to get hit hard so soon after Harvey.

The wife and I were going to go in December. Those plans have changed. I'm glad we didn't book anything yet.

Yeah I was going to post something about that.. I can tell you that Goodwill is actually a pretty good organization and $.83 to each dollar goes to help. Most of us use it as a place to unload old crap we don't want anymore so it's sort of a win-win for everyone. Mark Curran isn't even CEO. The current CEO has been there since 2008.

If you research it, some of the CEO salaries are actually higher than what are listed in the shitty meme. However, those charities all have very high efficiency ratings - and the executive salaries are a tiny fraction of the amount of money handled by the organizations. They are big organizations, and you're not going to attract the talent required to drive a huge organization like that without paying a high salary.

Great insight from our President on Hurricane Irma:

"It looks like it could be something that will be not good, believe me, not good."

Hurricane = not good? Thank you, President Obvious!

Schools in Orlando should be closed for Friday and Monday.

Disney and other parks still havne't said if they will close. They had to close one day last year for Hurricane Matthew - I think that was the first time they had to close in over 30 years.

Fingers crossed for the Floridian DVD Talkers that the potential 50% chance for a near miss that Space City Weather talks about on their blog comes to pass.

Hillsborough county schools closed Thursday and Friday 9/7 and 9/8. At least the commute to work will be easy.

Photo from my stay in 2013 in Oyster Bay. I took this pic from the house we stayed at:

The island is beautiful and the only place I would consider a vacation home. Hopefully they can recover quickly.

Re: Hurricane Irma 2017

Just got back from Walmart. Luckily, we already stocked up a couple days ago. So we didn't need much.

There was no water. The bread aisle was empty. Not a single package on the whole aisle. Peanut butter was all gone. Almost all the soup was gone, except for a perfect untouched row of Progresso Chicken & Wild Rice. I guess nobody likes that flavor.

I grabbed the last case of Pabst Blue Ribbon, so I'm all good.

That seems to have been made by someone who wants you to give money to veterans' organizations, religious otganizations, and nobody else.

Lots of wrong or outdated (Red Cross CEO retired 15 years ago ) info according to Snopes.

Some of the figures are high, some are lower, but no matter the difference these CEOs make a shit ton of money.

In Trump's defense, that's probably the first time he's told the truth since taking office.

Luckily they closing my office tomorrow and friday, that way I can stay with the kids. I was supposed to travel for work next Tuesday not sure if I should book my flight or wait for the aftermath and see if I should still go.
Actually not even sure if I should stay in the island through the hurricane

I learned some lessons from this storm. Water goes first, bread second, peanut butter 3rd, beer fourth and wine, nobody drinks that shit.

Will definitely have a lot more water stocked when June comes around next year. When the emergency is declared, you have about a day to buy bread while everyone else is scrambling for water.
