Forget the railroads, you gotta collect at least 3 of those motherfuckers to collect serious dough. Water Works is where the real money is...

I regularly read stories like this. But not on streets but on homes and businesses where owners failed to pay taxes and the city auctioned off the property. Cheng and Lam, per the article, are "in this business". They seem to do this all the time. I can only assume they "flip" the properties for profit.

The super silly part is, they would probably flip it in a heart beat to all the homeowners for a million or so. Which is penny's for the property owners. But the owners are probably to proud they got "swindled".

I don't see why the city would go back on the sale (the article mentions, that is not something they do). All the city wanted was the tax money. They got it.
I don't have anything to show but common sense.

This isn't a business that knowingly did not pay taxes, it's not an individual that knowingly did not pay the tax, it is 35 extremely wealthy home owners that mostly likely did not know there was even a tax bill to be paid.

You might not think it is fair but the wealthy draw a lot more water then you and I, they'll get this voided. Cheng and Lam won't lose money but it won't be the huge payday they were hoping for.

I used to live on the street that this private road opens up to, the thought of renting spaces to people outside of PT is a stretch. A good deal of the housing on that street has parking and I can't imagine anyone wanting to pay a lot of money for a parking spot that is out doors and exposed to the weather.

I also doubt the synagogue next door would be interested so I'm not sure how much of a market Chen and Lam actually have available.

Chen and Lam are basically looking to extort the home owners, good luck with that one.

Re: San Francisco street sells for $90K. Neighbors aren't happy

While somewhat amusing from the outside, I can easily empathize with the people who live there. It looks like the owners paid their HOA dues, and the HOA accountant didn't pay the bills due to not being the accountant any more. This should have been discovered by the new accountant when they took over.

I'd be surprised if anything happens other than the sale being voided.

Hmmm, immigrants going after rich folks.

Good going. Great way to get the Eye of Orange Sauron to turn towards you.

And others of his ilk, for they are pond scum worse that lawyers, politicians, and tax collectors.

What... If you're rich and fail to pay $14 / year taxes, you suddenly get to lose your privacy to some asshole "real-estate" capitalists? Not right, not right...
They'll get it back. But it will cost them. They'll simply make an offer to the couple that bought the street. They'll make millions.

Problem solved.

Are they illegal? I can't remember reading that in the article.

Nope not illegal. Note that I used the word immigrant, not illegal alien.

But just imagine a couple of calls from the wealthy contributors in the neighborhood and somebody recommends ICE perform a "routine review" of their immigration case, perhaps finding an impropriety or two.

The rich folks who live there are liberals, the real estate investors sound like liberals, some or all of the involved, (even those not yet involved) are scumbags; this is about as political as it gets nowadays!

Yeah... They're playing with fire, and it will burn them.

You don't mess with the Rich, especially if you're immigrants, legal or otherwise.

Yeah, don't mess with the rich, especially the rich who take 30 years to figure out a yearly tax hasn't been paid and 2 years to figure out their street had been sold. I would hate to have such ignorance, lazyness and negligence come after me!

Re: San Francisco street sells for $90K. Neighbors aren't happy

In the defense of those ignorant, lazy, negligent rich folks it was a failure on the part of the HOA. One could assume that any ONE of them, had they known, would probably have just covered the tax debt to avoid this inconvenience.

But now that they are aware of the issue, and the possibility of us hoi polloi parking in front of their mansions, they'll likely form ranks and pay a law firm much more than even the $90K just to smack this down.

Re: San Francisco street sells for $90K. Neighbors aren't happy

None of these home owners knew anything because? Too busy for stuff like annual meetings and reviewing yearly financial statements? Were these trivial matters left to this (now non-existent) accountant alone?

"Well your honor, we changed accountant 30 years ago and we're not sure what happened after that."

Brilliant defense that is.
