Re: Stephen Hawking: Humans Must Flee Earth Within A Century

We are trying to prevent a major asteroid impact. We're tracking a large number of asteroids.

I know the guy who wrote the detection software for LINEAR and then for Catalina.

Would that thread be the same or greater on another planet like Mars? I would assume they get more asteroid hits than Earth.

All kidding aside.. This is important stuff and this work that is going on is invaluable. We need the 2 pronged approach of being able to leave in case of a large asteroid or a way to deflect/destroy or evacuate away from one that is really small (although I wonder how much time we'd have to react to one that small.. Detecting those would be more challenging).

Not in the beginning. Life will be hard so only those willing to take the risk or being forced to, will go i.e. the convicts, the poor, and those seeking adventure. Until life in the colony is easier than life on Earth, the rich won't go until/unless mass extinction is imminent.

Easy for Hawking to say. He'll be pushed...no pun intended...to the front of the "Gets to Leave Earth and Survive, Fuck You if You Get Left Behind" lottery line while the rest of us have to take our chances.

I did. Don't know much about him, but Nye's a recent target of hate from right-wingers.

Maybe. Good point. However, *someone* will have to pay big bucks to get those pioneers up there, and it probably won't be the pioneers, poor, or convicts. In other words, somebody will give them a free ride in exchange for doing the very hard, unglamorous work of setting up base until the rich CAN get up there and take over!

At which time, it'll rapidly devolve into "Earth V. 2.0" unless something very fundamental in human nature changes (ie, eliminate or greatly curtail the species' innate avariciousness). "positive" Eugenics to the rescue here??? The biological capability to de-select for it will certainly exist by then..

Like how the rich showed up and drove all the pioneers out of Utah and now the whole state looks like Manhattan. I hear ya man. You are nailing it. And eugenics too. That's sounds great. You should be running this thing.

We'd better solve all the problems on Earth first

Yeah, like I'm really going to trust what a Dalek has to say. A lot of easier to conquer the planet if you've shipped most of its population to a barren wasteland.

I don't know anything about Mack, but technically we've had quite a few extinction events already and something always survives..

That's life, in general... not human civilization.

Did it bother anybody else that Hawking specifically listed ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE as a threat?!
Yep. And it's unfortunate Stephen doesn't have more artificial intelligence. I'd read his articles more if he did.

Their point was that certain resources necessary for space travel were going to be depleted on Earth within a century and once those resources were gone, humanity was't going to leave Earth again. Don't recall what those resource were, but I think the article mentioned they were available elsewhere in space.
Probably dilithium crystals.

If this is true, I don't give a flying fuck. None of us will be around to worry about this if & when it does happen.
