I understand about 1/3rd of that paragraph.

Snapchat is really just a different instant messaging client. It's main claim to fame is that every message (including pics) that you send are automatically deleted like 10 seconds after the recipient reads them. Sure, they can take screenshots of the stuff still, but if they do it notifies the sender they did that.

Main use is for sending dirty pics, and cheating on spouses.

Re: Popular stuff you have no clue about.

I used to be able to post pictures to Instagram from my phone, but then something changed and I've no desire to figure it out.

It's not that we oldies are clueless, we just have better things to do with our time than keep up with shit.

I know who the Kardashians are (more or less) but I have no clue why they're popular or why people are more interested in their lives than those of actual celebrities.

I thought Snapchat was for dick pics but apparently people use it for regular chatting now?

Re: Popular stuff you have no clue about.

I don't get Snapchat either. I see people use it with filters to make you look like a dog, cat, tiger or have some funky background. I don't know how that's a social media app. Who are you even interacting with?

I downloaded the app because people were talking about it, but couldn't make heads or tails on how to use it. So I deleted it.

Thanks to the media incessantly shoving them down our throats I know who the Kardashians are but with the exception of Kim, I pride myself on not being able to identify the other ones.

I still don't get it. I've installed and deleted it three times thinking there was something I was missing.

Wait, you can make your dick look like a dog, a cat, or a tiger?

I'll assume you are genuinely interested in and try again.

Unless the DVD in question comes with a "free digital copy", you'll have to copy the movie (or TV show or whatever) into digital files that you can then just watch like any other video file on your computer. To do this, you'll need to "rip" it ("rip" just means extract the video of the movie on the DVD).

What you cannot do is just pop a DVD into your computer's DVD-ROM drive and copy a video file off of the DVD because of the copyright protection baked into most commercial DVDs. You'll need a piece of software (or a combination of two applications) that will first disable the copyright protection and then copy the movie into a video file. MakeMKV is one popular option, but there are several others. Once you've done that, all you need is a video viewing program (VLC is excellent and free) and you can watch it on your computer without the DVD itself.

Here's the problem. MakeMKV makes a full-sized copy of the movie. Without compressing it to a lower format (shrinking it down), a typical DVD movie is 5-7 GB (and a movie from a Blu Ray is more like 20-30 GB). If you have a huge media server with lots of disk space and plan on watching the movie on a 50" TV, keeping it at the original size may be worth it. However, if you want to rip movies so you can watch them on your iPad with a 64 GB or smaller storage capacity, it doesn't take very many 6 GB video files to take up all the space you have left. Plus, since the iPad or tablet screen is so small compared to that of a TV, there is no need for that extra data. So you compress them down to a lower bitrate and/or a lower resolution, which makes the movies much, much smaller.

That means you can have copies of your 20-30 favorite movies on your tablet instead of just 3 or 4 of them. Handbrake is one piece of software that can do this for you. There are also commercial apps that will do the whole process (copyright disable, rip, compress) for you in one fell swoop but they are a little more expensive.

Re: Popular stuff you have no clue about.

I use Snapchat because my kids use it more than Facebook etc.

Downloading digital copies is pretty 2009. Now the way to do it is to redeem your copy on a service like VUDU or iTunes. From there you can watch it on any device or download it for travel. I don't bother with that complicated ripping stuff.

I checked out vudu for fun the other day and scrolled the 'movies for free' selection. Tried to watch Clifford, but didn't make it all the way through.

Went back last night to finish it, and discovered I had five movies in my 'collection'? So I watched Blair Witch 2 ... nice to know I had a collection I didn't know I had, but I don't get it ...

Sadly, aside the age, I am I the same boat. There are many things listed I know about, but I truly do t understand. Snapchat being a big one. Taking stupid selfies and Adding a dumb puppy nose or deer horns and sending it to friends, all day long?!!!!!

I rip Redbox and Netflix rentals so that I can watch them later. I often rip a rental and send it right back without watching it until days or weeks later. ON a trip to Japan and Australia last year I rented and ripped 10 movies so I would have a nice selection for the long flights. Alas, they offered so many free movies on the planes (including a few I had ripped), I ended up mostly just watching those instead.

I fly for work quite a bit so it is nice to walk around with a small 2-in-1 laptop and tiny external hard drive that, between the two of them, have probably 200 movies, documentaries and comedy concerts on them that I can watch on demand off-line whenever I want. Saves on weight also since I always have to travel with my work laptop and used to travel with a personal laptop and an iPad as well. Now I just carry the work laptop and the 2-in-1, which is only marginally larger and heavier than the old iPad.

Another one for Snapchat. My sister and my wife (both 6 years younger than me) use it all the time and I'm like "what the fuck?"

Have you had a chat with them about how they shouldn't send naked pics of themselves on that? That even though the images self destruct there's lots of ways of saving them and it's really child porn if they are under age? You'd be surprised how young kids are sending nudes to each other these days.

I haven't yet used Handbrake (meGUI is actually now the preferred program for those in the know), but this is actually a modern-day realm with which I am superficially very well-acquainted.

I just saw a commercial for a TV show called Naked and Afraid. Other than ratings, why would anyone try to survive naked in a jungle? Think of all the sharp, poisonous and biting things on the ground and leaves that they are trampling through.

Re: Popular stuff you have no clue about.

Went on vacation during the Holidays and my niece was driving me nuts with her Facebook/Instagram/Snapchat stuff. She'd even stand by her phone while it was charging so she could send/respond to stuff. It's like her entire life is consumed by social media. And she's not 14, she's 24.
