Winterpocalypse 2016!

Who else is in the path of the storm? We're expecting a blizzard to drop 18" to 24" of snow on us. Maryland governor Hogan has declared a state of emergency. The county schools are closed for the day.

Everyone here in the mid-Atlantic is in full panic mode.

Re: Winterpocalypse 2016!

I went to Home Depot when they opened at 6am and got a shovel (how they still had shovels is amazing) and two big bags of melt. They even had a few flashlights left. My wife managed to lose all of ours. I may stop by the dollar store for some cheap flashlights and candles. I got out the sterno and the battery powered radios. I also charged all of the devices, extra batteries, external batteries, and spare laptops.

In other words, we will get 3".

Well not everyone, just those who believe the media driven frenzy.

It snows in January. It has happened before, it will happen again.

I wonder what people here would do if we ever had a real disaster?

I'm 60 miles north of Philadelphia and 60 miles west of New York City. We are in the midrange of the snow band and are predicted to get 8-14". Par for the course the last few years.

So a huge blizzard isn't a real disaster? What counts as a real disaster? We've had hurricanes and tornados. We even had a small earthquake. And 9/11 definitely affected the DC area.

This was a disaster

Knickerbocker Blizzard
Jan. 27-28, 1922
Friday-Saturday
Snowfall: 28.0"

The largest storm is D.C. history was called the Knickerbocker Blizzard after the theater that collapsed due to the heavy snow accumulation. The flat roof of the Knickerbocker Theatre, the largest and newest movie house in D.C. at the time, collapsed during a Jan. 28 evening showing of the silent film "Get-Rich-Quick Wallingford," killing 98 people and injuring 133
.

So far all we have this time is panic driven people rushing to Costco to buy water and the news media inciting every kind of frenzy they can to keep people watching their ads.

It snows. Snow will melt.

They're predicting up to 30 inches in the DC area. Are people not allowed to be concerned unless a building collapses?

Look, I get that people freak out. I went to Trader Joe's yesterday and it looked like a bomb hit. They were sold out of half their stuff. I don't know why! If people are expecting to be snowed in for a week, why would they be buying SO much stuff? Usually you go grocery shopping and buy for a week or two anyway.

But the complete opposite reaction of "Eh, it's just snow" is not really reasonable either. This is a big storm. This is going to objectively be a lot of snow, let alone a lot of snow for this region.

Re: Winterpocalypse 2016!

And this is one of several reasons why I own a Toyota 4Runner.

30 inches is a lot of snow and will probably shut everything down all weekend into Monday. But that's 3 days of sitting in your house watching Netflix with some snow shoveling. If you don't have enough food and water in your house to survive for 3 days, you are a nitwit.

what is the protocol with the -mageddon and -pocalypse suffixes? Is it -pocalypse in even numbered years and -mageddon in odd numbered years?

Yeah, we got ripped off by the media hype. Been in mid-70s here.
I will say I do not envy anyone on the East Coast. Regardless of media hype or not, that weather sucks.

We have about 6" on the ground already here in Nashville, expecting another 2". Schools have been closed since Wednesday when we got ice and 1". I wonder if Netflix can handle all the traffic they will get today and tonight.

As someone who moved out of the northeast after last winter, I hope it is a huge, brutal storm so I can sit here in the sun and laugh.

Re: Winterpocalypse 2016!

Is winter here yet?

This is the strangest winter I've seen in Michigan for a while. Was walking around in slippers and a t-shirt pulling presents out of the car for the kids on Christmas Eve.

We really haven't had more than a few inches more than once or twice, and just a dusting a few times. My daughter has been angsting for snow because she likes to sled on her birthday in early January. No dice yet.

Somehow this one is missing us I guess.

Re: Winterpocalypse 2016!

We have not gotten any snow yet (other than a dusting of less than an inch, once). But here we go. The good news is January is almost over, another month or so to go. Greatest winter ever!

Re: Winterpocalypse 2016!

My work site is closing today at noon. But since the county schools are closed, I was already staying home to watch my son and do as much work from home as a 6-year old will let me do between yells for attention.

We're stocked up on food for a long weekend, I have a fire going in our fireplace, and a full gas can for the snowblower.

At work we're in the middle of a three month long, 24/7, critical spacecraft hardware test. Several people are "camping out" at work to keep testing going through the closures.

Re: Winterpocalypse 2016!

They closed schools here even though the first flurries aren't supposed to hit until after noon and the real snowfall isn't expected to start until after three. When I was in school we'd be lucky to get an early dismissal out of this.

Re: Winterpocalypse 2016!

We got 2 or 3 inches on Tuesday here in Kansas City and another inch or so yesterday. However, there's a nice layer of ice under it because it's colder than a well digger's ass, which is what makes it dangerous.

I am housebound with my left arm in a cast from hand to almost the armpit, and while theoretically I can drive, I prefer not to in this.

In Newberry, the Upper Peninsula Michigan town that my dad and three of my brothers live in and around, there are about 20 inches of snow and more falling. Unlike KC, the UP is used to snow so they have not ground to a screeching halt.
