Yeah, the flip flops with the bottle opener seem pretty handy to me.

Re: Are cargo shorts for douchebags?

I've been wearing cargo shorts since the eighties and don't plan on stopping now. I wear flip flops in the summer, I like the Rainbow ones. If I'm walking far, I have a pair of ~25 year old, three strap, cork, "Air Jesus" Birkenstocks that are simply awful looking and my wife hates but are like walking on pillows. I also wear aviator shades that I got at Target, if you must know. I never tuck t-shirts in, but I do wear undershirts with polos.

You may not want to take fashion advice from me.

Having said that, plaid shorts + golf visor = douche.

Re: Are cargo shorts for douchebags?

Not so much for douchebags, but more like for kids, but I tend to feel that way about shorts in general. I bought a couple of pairs of non-cargo shorts for a trip to Austin last summer and wore them, but then quickly switched back to jeans as there was no major cooling effect with the shorts anyhow and I felt like I was 12 wearing them.

Unless you're doing something athletic or on a beach, I think shorts on adult men look juvenile. Or maybe that's because most of the men I see wearing shorts are in their late 20s/early 30s and living like they're still in undergrad (Williamsburg hipsters), so maybe it is just part of the whole concept.

True enough. I live 5 miles from the beach, nobody wears jeans or anything other than shorts during the spring, summer or fall here.

Is this a generational thing? I guess I've never associated shorts with children's wear, although I understand the history behind it.

Now we're talking. Greatest invention since whomever decreed women should wear their purse strap between the boobs.

Now that would be a thread worth starting.

Re: Are cargo shorts for douchebags?

Cargo shots when I wear them (I am 39 and keep in good shape) are more for comfort and function... they are a must in the hot sweltering weather here, they are also good at theme parks for holding your things and not losing them. I normally store my wallet in them anyways, found that keeping my wallet in my back pocket while sitting was bad for my back

I couldn't really say. I mean, growing up and even now, my father will wear shorts (as fathers do) on vacations and stuff or if it gets hot out, but not as a matter of course.

My brother is 7 years younger than me and he wears shorts a lot more often. But, I'm 27 and basically stopped wearing shorts as "normal" clothes some times in high school. At best, I'll throw on basketball shorts to run to a nearby store to pick up food or something. But, if I am going to do anything more substantial (go for a longer walk, go out to eat, etc), I don't wear shorts.

This being said, I'm a jeans and tee shirt guy, so it is not like I'm overly formal generally. I just associate shorts with childhood for some reason.

I hear that quite often about wallets in back pockets.

"Thread"? You think too small. That deserves a sub forum (starting with a thread dedicated to her)!

Re: Are cargo shorts for douchebags?

Maybe the no-shorts thing is regional because it's the people who wear jeans/khakis on sweltering days here in Orange County who look out of place. Style-wise, brands like Volcom and Hurley fit well and aren't covered in patterns and ugly stitching and other obnoxious shit.

Personally, I only wear cargo shorts when backpacking abroad and need the extra pockets to store stuff. Unless you're hauling around a bunch of crap, there's no reason to wear cargo shorts otherwise (but wearing won't make you a douchebag, just fashion-challenged).

Yeah, cargo shorts may be dorky, but I've never thought of them as remotely douchy. They also don't make one a hipster.

They remind me of suburban fratboys, so yeah, they're douchebag-wear.

Re: Are cargo shorts for douchebags?

Do you mean khaki shorts? Like these cargo shorts?

I made the switch to them around three years ago and never looked back. They are much more comfortable and breathe a lot better than denim shorts so I tend to stay cooler in the summer wearing khaki / cargo shorts than jean shorts. Plus, they simply look nicer, too.

As to the poll question, they're for everybody. I wear 'em, but the poll doesn't describe me! ...Er, well, to my knowledge.
