Can I mail something via USPS in a FedEx box?

I sold an item on Amazon today, and I didn't have a box big enough to ship it. I'd like to mail it tomorrow, so I went out looking for a box. I usually buy my boxes at Meijer, but I found that they didn't have anything big enough. Only other place I could think of that would still be open and would carry shipping Materials was FedEx Office.

I bought a box there, but of course there are FedEx logos on all 4 sides. It's not some free white mailer, it's a regular brown box that I purchased, but it just happens to have FedEx logos on it. Will they accept it like this, or should I make some attempt to cover up the logos?

Not trying to be an ass, just needed a box tonight so I could print my own postage and drop it off on my way to work tomorrow, and this was the only suitable box I could find. Thoughts?

I'd leave negative feedback for that.

If you want your package to be delivered by Tom Hanks in 10 years, sure, go ahead.

Should be fine. Nothing in the DMM specifying you can't use it:

I have used a different shipping company's box but I turned it inside out with packing tape to hold it together.

Re: Can I mail something via USPS in a FedEx box?

Honestly, I was afraid of it not being structurally sound if I tried to turn it inside out and put it back together. What I decided to do was to cut up a brown paper bag and tape pieces of it over the logos. Might look odd up close, but from a distance it looks like a regualr box, and I figured it would look less shitty than if I just scribbled over it with a marker.

Next time: clear packing tape and some 8.5x11 sheets of paper.

The post office will accept nearly anything as a shipping vessel. You could wrap it up in an old carpet with twine around it. As long as the shipping label is obivous, they don't really care how it's packaged (though your buyer might). I've seen people with some crazy looking packages, especially around Christmas.

Why? For the shipper saving money which ultimately saves the buyer money?

Not a slight to you but buyers on ebay kill me sometimes.. they think we get free boxes from somewhere!

If you paid for it, I don't think it'd be restricted to FedEx. But I'm not sure.

I'm fairly certain the USPS will not ship anything that has a UPS or FedEx logo on it.

You can always lightly score the box, around the logo/sticker/etc. and pull off a thin layer of the box's paper, removing the offending piece with it.

I know that was a joke but that's one of the few ways they won't accept a shipment. Last year (around Christmas) I was behind a woman who wanted to mail a box tied with string. The guy at the counter said the string could get tangled in rollers at a sorting station.

Re: Can I mail something via USPS in a FedEx box?

I do a great deal of shipping.

The box cannot be from a liquor product. If it's a Priority Shipping box you must use it as such. If it's a UPS or FED EX box, this is ok, just mark over the Fed Ex or UPS logos.

We will use all kinds of boxes to ship and that's how my Post Office takes them, yours may differ.

Wrap the box with brown packing paper. This way you cover everything and it looks good too.

Yeah I actually do that all the time too. I've got a little stash of them in the corner of my basement, but I didn't have anything big enough for this. I've shipped stuff with all kinds of different logos on the boxes. To me, the logo is no different than say a Staples logo, indicative only of where I bought it. I was only concerned in this case because the logo was that of a competitive service.

I mailed it this morning with no issue, covered the logos with parts of a brown paper bag, as I said before.

Re: Can I mail something via USPS in a FedEx box?

Slight tangent side note: my wife and I recently got a P.O. Box from the USPS in our attempt to go off the grid as much as possible i.e.; all household bills, credit cards, even our drivers licenses (you can do that in California, who knew?) have been changed over to the P.O. Box and I discovered that you can't receive packages from competing carriers, UPS, FedEX, OnTrac, etc... makes sense... but sucks ballz big time. It can make online purchasing a pain.

Obviously if you have a P.O. Box with a third party store like 'Mailbox Etc.' you can receive shipments from any carrier but the yearly rate for those P.O. Boxes can usually be two to three times as expensive.

Re: Can I mail something via USPS in a FedEx box?

the real question is why do you feel it's worth "going off the grid" if you continue to stay on the grid?

I mean, if you're buying stuff online you're a consumer so the whole "off grid" thing doesn't really make sense to me.

Maybe I'm missing something, and I truly want to know. This isn't an asshole remark.

Not taken as an "asshole remark."

I can deal with retailers sending me stuff... they actually have no idea that the billing address (P.O. Box) is not the same as the shipping address.

I agree, it's a very thin, very fine line of "off the grid." And short of moving to the woods no one will ever be truly off the grid. But, what I am attempting to do is keep as much information about me, where I live, etc. off of the net/grid as possible.

In the two short months that we've had the P.O. Box we've 100% eliminated all the junk mail (Post Office won't deliver junk mail to a P.O. Box) that we once received at our house and all credit card solicitations have ended completely. We would get one to two credit card solicitations per day at our house address... it's now zero! And all of those were from credit card companies that we already do business with.

My wife and I are in the process of buying another house and I want to attempt to keep this new address off of any web search. Our first home comes up in so many web searches it's actually pretty disturbing. I'm pretty sure we will be successful in ending our paper trail out our former residence that we are currently turning into a rental property.

A week ago we had someone attempt to use my wife's credit number to purchase gas... thing is they had the wrong zip code (our old pre P.O. Box zip code) and Amex shut them down immediately. Amex contacted me to see if my wife was trying to use the credit card with the old zip code.

So based on that incident alone, to me the P.O Box has already paid dividends.

That's the short and long of it.
